Cy Hawk Rivalry

Jesus. I get that this rivalry, but ISU - Iowa has devolved into almost insufferable levels of pettiness. Why can't fans on each side just enjoy what should likely be a top 25 match up - a rarity in this series?

From what I have seen, both Iowa and Iowa State have been fairly consistently in, or around, preseason top 25. When fans spend all their time pretending their rival is terrible simply because it is their rival, they just come off as looking like they have now underlying knowledge of the sport.

Should be a great match-up of two defensive teams, and has a legit chance of featuring as a game of the week.

I think Iowa will be pretty good this year. Both teams have question marks, mainly Iowa at QB, RB, TE, WR and LB and us at OL, RB and CB but to think either team is going to be bad is dumb

Don't judge the rivalry by this thread.

You're welcome.

I know there are some people on this website just looking to troll sometimes with some of the things they say about Iowa, but for the most part, most people know what they're talking about. On the contrary, most of the fans on that website sounded like they had no idea what they were talking about. There were few trying to give credit, but they would get shot down. Here were my favorite quotes..

"He isn’t even particularly talented, he’s an average college QB who benefited from coming in with no scouting for teams to rely on." Talking about Purdy

"We will have two wins in the books before we take the field with the clowns. They haven’t gone up against our 4-2-5 defense yet. I think this is the year Brandon Smith really breaks out for us. We grind it out and win 28-9." 9 points is incredibly specific

"I was listening to a You tuber postulate that Iowa State would win 7-9 games this year. Sounds a bit high to me. Yes they return their entire offensive line, most of their defense but still 9 games? My response was 5-6 games." I mean had we won our bowl game last year we would've been at 9 wins but apparently that's impossible.

"Maybe 2 or 3 wins if they get lucky." I hope this person's trolling but hawk logic is something else.

"6-6 or 7-5, with a ceiling of 8-4 if they get very lucky. Their losses will be very tough, Purdy looked like an all star because of those around him. This year he will be average, and there about a 60% chance he gets replaced mid season in typical Clown style. I think we beat them by one or two scores, maybe more if Purdy gets laid out half a dozen times in the first half. Fans have the Cheez it bowl to look forward to." The predictions weren't terrible here, but making fun of us playing in bowl games when we've made better bowl games than Iowa in back to back years is hilarious.

A lot of ignorant posts over there, which is expected when Iowa fans discuss ISU and vice versa.

I wouldnt be shocked with anything from 6-10 wins this season for ISU. Your defense will keep you in every game with the exception of maybe OU. A lot of one possession games often comes down to which way the ball bounces.

Really, the point I was attempting to convey is that the majority of posters think that all of a sudden, our coaching staff doesn't know how to do their jobs. The Purdy hate is comical as well. The insecure of your fan base are starting to feel uncomfortable with what Campbell is doing. But these guys aren't going away and we're just starting to scratch the surface of their capabilities.

Lol yeah Jimbo and Saban offered a QB that's not talented

It just shows a lack of understanding for the entirety of the Big-12 conference. It's pretty apparent the conference as a whole is having a down year, while ISU brings back a majority of a good ISU team. It's just silly pegging ISU as a 5 win team, especially when you look at the schedule.

Iowa fans have been talking like that about the ISU program for years and ISU fans the same about Iowa. This uneducated smack talk isnt some new phenomenon that started once Campbell arrived in Ames.

This one is my favorite.

"That being said, Iowa State as a team barely broke 100 yards rushing against the Hawkeyes last year. A lot of credit is being given to Iowa State's defensive line, however, they weren't able to stop Iowa's offensive line last year. And this year Iowa's offensive line looks to be better."

LOL Iowa State held Iowa to 271 yards of total offense and that dominate Iowa line opened up enough massive holes for 105 rushing yards on 36 carries. What a bunch of f****** morons over there...

No... Iowa fans have always looked down their noses at the Iowa State program. Now they are realizing that Iowa State has a legit football team and they are nervous AF that the gap continues to close. Deep down they know that CMC isn't going anywhere are that really stings...

Campbell is a great coach, no doubt.

But I dont think the ignorant posters on HN or the fools that post this kind of crap on Twitter think about it that way. They are the part of the fan base that has always posted/talked like that about ISU going back 20-30 years and will continue to do so no matter how much success ISU has.

No, you're right and that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the level of 'stupid' increases with message board Hawk fans as ISU nets more wins.

I could see why their posters might think we'd be terrible or bad next year if we had one 5-6 win season and beating only mediocre teams, but we had back to back 8 win seasons / bowl game appearances and good ones at that. We've been in the top 25 for multiple weeks the past two years, and we're also bringing back a load of talent. On top of all that, we're being projected as the third best team in the conference. All of this more than anything shows the lack of knowledge over on those boards for anything other than what's going on in Iowa City.

Our schedule sets us up nicely to have a special season. Will that happen? No one knows. Could we fall flat our our faces? Sure. But a lot of things would have to happen and sort of spiral out of control. With our coaching staff and the players we have returning, I just don't see us winning less than 7 games.

Weird, it's almost like you just described every single Hawk fan that I grew up with during the Hayden Fry era...

The rhetoric from isu fan is that CMC has isu on a straight line trajectory up. No different than what we heard from isu fans with your last coach or the one before.

The hardest thing for me to understand is how in the information age, you do not know what you instate rival has coming back. A team you play every year.
It seems every time this game gets brought up on one of the Iowa boards, its ISU only scored 3 points last year, why should this year be any different? Someone did point out that Iowa only scored 13 and the last game was 6-3 with 5 minutes left to play.

Its the same garbage ISU lost Montgomery and Butler, and will therefore suck, but Iowa will just reload after losing their 2 first round TE's and the best WR and not miss a beat.
