Court Storming

Insert “sweep the leg” gif!!

Pretty sure Murph is headed to the NCAA offices right now to try and get court storming banned. Will use all the camera angle videos and Clark interviews he has for evidence. Pretty sure he will break down in tears telling the story about OSU purposely trying to hurt the greatest basketball player the world has ever seen and how it almost could have ended her career.

As long as the player isn't going into the stands who cares?
They were outside the boundaries of the court into the court side seats initiating contact with fans. People want to cry player safety but also are also okay with this? This is a very soft and minor example. Just playing devils advocate to the player safety crowd.

we talk about court storming but we also see players making an effort to celebrate inches away from opposing fans.

Yep.

That's 100% bad as the worst court storming has ever been.

I we crack down on court storming those players need suspensions.

There is another angle of this that ESPN was showing that really look to me like he pushes the fan as the guy runs in front of him and gets hurt in the process. I don't think he is an entirely innocent victim here.

He absolutely was trying to light that kid up and hurt himself in the process. Of course a Duke player is the victim. Scheyer also looks like a 5 year who just saw his dog get run over.

I don't feel like this is a difficult issue if an athletic department is serious about protecting players. But I feel like schools like the visibility. A few steps would reduce frequency and make safer when fans do.

  1. Head coaches should publicly create messages against storming and show on video board at every game.
  2. The coaches and players only need protection for less than 20 seconds. Schools should be able to create a security barrier to funnel fans toward the half of court away from the bench. Something as simple as snow fence or other softer barrier could be used.
  3. If it's a problem, don't put students courtside. Move them back to like row10 behind the baskets and put geriatric season ticket holders in front of them.
  4. TV should take same approach as with streakers. Television coverage and highlight shows should not show fans storming court.
  5. Maybe school could create an alternative celebration for fans which would encourage them to stay in their seats- aka juicy wiggle, sweet caroline
I am not convinced court storming is bad. But there are probably ways to make it safer for teams and still make a big victory fun for students.

2 is the only one really necessary.

Plenty of schools have shown its relatively simple to protect the players as long as a plan is in place.

WF dropped the ball on that. And now a lot of blue-blood lovers (which includes a ton of espn personalities) who have always hated court storms because they tended to only see those in losses, are jumping on an opportunity to attack something they've always hated.

There’s very simple solutions to be put in place. College kids should be able to storm the court and enjoy it. Much like all things it can be done without incident and be fun. While I respect scheyer being upset his guy was hurt, he’s never mentioned banning it before today
