Country Music: The Beat That’s Killing The Genre

*Makes fun of country music - listens to rap that sounds the same about slinging dope and killing people while driving from their 8-4 job in their dodge caravan.*

Tell that to Josh Abbot, Cody Johnson, and all the other TX artists signing with Nashville label to try and make it big time.

Those guys were pretty generic to start. A lot of the Red Dirt/"Texas Country" artists are pretty close to being pop country, they just have a more obvious rock influence.

That said, there are loads of really good artists in that scene as well, and they don't sound a damn thing like pop country.

Mike & The Moonpies have been pretty well stuck on my Spotify feed lately.

Aaron Lewis? Ha! Ya he’s so country! This is exactly what I’m talking about. The posing filters down to all levels of the genre.

He is real country music. Great artists can cross genres.

I think there has been a little bit of a resurgence in hip hop lately. I listened to it pretty hard around the time of 50, The Game, Eminem, Nappy Roots, old Kanye, etc. but have picked it back up again the last couple of years.

Big Sean is a beast. Then you've got Kendrick, J. Cole, and all them carrying it right now who are very talented dudes.

Yeah, I've been trying to listen to newer hiphop, but with not much success so far.

**cough Jason Aldean cogh**

Exactly. While I like Jason somewhat the 2 big hits that got him started were actually written and/or previously recorded by other artists. John Rich wrote "Hicktown" and "Amarillo Sky." Amarillo Sky was actually recorded by John on his "Rescue Me" album in 2001 and also by McBride & the Ride in 2002 before Aldean made it popular in 2005.

Probably another reason why I am a fan of Big & Rich's music is because both have written songs that turned out to be bigger hits for other artists than they've ever had success themselves individually or a duo combined. Tim and Faith both had #1 songs written by them, Kenny wrote Tim's "Last Dollar" song and John co-wrote Faith's "Mississippi Girl" as examples. John has some pretty notable songs on his list that made #1 or charted well by others: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_written_by_John_Rich

Someone mentioned Jamey Johnson as "new" above. Ummm, nope is not really that "new" if you know of his past and is another one of those guys that clawed their way into relevancy while also writing big hits for others too. He actually re-invented himself a little, his first big hit was "The Dollar" which sounds nothing like the type of music he is known for now.

Interesting post. I'm a country music fan (can actually enjoy almost all genres to a point), but lyrics and stereotypes have seemingly come to a point for most artists that make me want to scratch my eardrums out. I did find the song below as a funny relief that kind of plays fun into this idea though.

Winner. :D

Maybe I'm just becoming the old man yelling at the cloud, but there are so many generic bro-country sounding guys on the radio right now that I can't tell any of them apart. I flip the channel if it's Aldean, Bryan, or anyone who sounds like them. So I'm flipping a lot. What's most disappointing to me is how I can drive to and from work (about 40 minutes total) and hear bits of 1, maybe 2 songs by a woman on the eight channels I flip through. One is typically Kelsea Ballerini who is pretty much a lady bro-country artist, imo. It's like someone took that douche's advice from a few years ago and treat women artists like tomatoes in a salad. But like a cheap fast food salad that tosses one giant grape tomato in and calls it good.

When I run and listen to Pandora, I hear all these great songs by Kacey Musgraves (love Golden Hour), Maren Morris (probably the only other woman really played much on radio), Miranda/Pistol Annies, Cam, others - where is their air time? I used to think maybe it was cyclical and the big women artists just didn't have albums out but it's been like this for at least 3-4 years now. Miranda is usually bigger than she is now and sometimes a new artist will pop in for a bit before fading. Carrie has been the other big artist but tbh, I don't love what I've heard of her new album.

I just took a look at the current top 40 - THREE songs are by women! Kelsea, Carrie, and Maddie & Tae at 19, 23, and 49. Not sure if Lady A, Band Perry, and LBT are on breaks right now? Always like their stuff as well.

I find myself listening to pop more and more because they seem to have a much heavier rotation of women artists - and are stealing away some of the country ones. Taylor Swift entirely, and Maren, Carrie, Kelsea, and others have all dabbled. And I can't blame them.

Im just being a provocateur and defending my city. Hayes Carll is probably my favorite artist.

Radio is always going to play what they their listeners want to listen to and rightness now it has more of a pop feel

The Band Perry has been Pop for a few years now
