Country Music: The Beat That’s Killing The Genre

There are some extremely talented country artists. I have a lot of respect for the guys and gals who write their own music and lead their own bands.

Often, the studio has already recorded the instrumentals and are just waiting for an artist to buy the song for their record and show up to add the vocal. For those "cookie cutter" artists, I have no respect.

Pop country will continue evolving into full blown pop and real country music like Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours, Shovels and Rope, Jason Isbell, etc. will back fill it. We've already seen it with these songs drifting onto pop stations and such.

Country music isn't dead or dying. It's still there and not terribly difficult to find. You just have to look a little harder than the FM dial.

I love the new real country music. Give me some Cody Jinks, Aaron Lewis, Jamey johnson, Sturgill Simpson, chris Stapleton, whiskey Myers, etc.

Aaron Lewis? Ha! Ya he’s so country! This is exactly what I’m talking about. The posing filters down to all levels of the genre.

Tyler Childers is so damn good. I went to Hinterland mainly because of Sturgill and since then, I've listened to Sturgill here and there and Tyler pretty consistently. So gritty and such a great voice. Speaking of a great country voice, anybody into Colter Wall? Haven't listened to him a ton yet so I'm not totally sold but I dig him a little bit. Weird watching him perform because it doesn't seem like that voice should come from that dude.

I agree with the slap at "Country", but Hip-Hop's been a drum-loop beat for the past 20 years and nobody's complained.

I will agree that Hip-hop has fallen off a lot in the past 20 years or so. It peaked in the 90s, and has waned ever since. It turned into bad R&B with a few rap verses thrown in.

When I look at my hip-hop playlist there's not much on there newer than 2003.

I think this is a critical distinction.

I listened to Merle Haggard's 40 Greatest Hits this past weekend because I love it dearly. And I love the George Jones, Buck Owens and Hank Williams discs I have. I consider my musical palate pretty sophisticated and I love my REAL country collection as much as my Pink Floyd or Black Sabbath collections. Whatever this stuff I hear on "Country" radio is, it's not Country music. I can't think of anything worse than what I hear referred to as "Hot Country". It is just brutal and I consider it an affront to Country Music.

Sorry - couldn't resist with that last post because that's what country sounds like to me now. I couldn't agree more with the OP's video!!!

KJJY has gone back to playing more of the acts from the 90's & 00's, before the bro brigade took over. We used to love going dancing, but you can't two-step (or even triple-step) to a lot of the more recent stuff. :(

When I was searching for that video, I found this one - with 30 top acts from that era (including a couple that later went "bro") it mixes several songs to highlight several decades, from Dolly & Willie & John Denver to Lady A & Miranda.

Just wish it didn't make me think of WVU... :(

I'm far from a Country fan but can dabble at times. That said, I have seen Eric Church live and that is one of the best shows I have ever seen. The man is legit and would kick any poser's ass.

I think there has been a little bit of a resurgence in hip hop lately. I listened to it pretty hard around the time of 50, The Game, Eminem, Nappy Roots, old Kanye, etc. but have picked it back up again the last couple of years.

Big Sean is a beast. Then you've got Kendrick, J. Cole, and all them carrying it right now who are very talented dudes.
