Could this year's defense be legit?

We are all pumped that he choose to come here and we all think he can become dominate, but the bolded is just not true. He would be our 4th best when he comes on campus (depending on Simon), but he'd for sure be below McD, Laing, and Rump. Towards the end of the year I could see him over taking McDonough (I think he's a little soft). So he'd likely be a starter his sophomore year next to Laing. He's looks similar body wise to Laing, but Pompey is a little thinner in the legs.

Look... I am not trying to knock the guys we currently have. I like Rump and Jake. At the end of the day though the only upside they have over Pompey would be experience in playing at the Big XII level and if we are honest about it... they haven't faired too well in their experience. I hope they improve to the point that this won't be the case come this fall.

I don't have a problem with you critiquing players (impossible without stepping on toes on this site). I just don't think we should pump a freshman as our best DT. Freshman rarely make an impact on the Dline. I just don't want to see post later this year asking why Pompey isn't playing, he had so many offerz (McKnight in basketball). If he comes in and does make an impact, Great, I'd love it.

I think Laing is the DTs Maggitt. He's better than McDonough (like Maggitt is better than Latt), but he gets less love.

Pompey looks to have a lot of talent and potential. Probably as much or more than any of our current DTs. But talent and potential do not equal Big12 level production and do not make him our best DT.

You have to be pretty special to just play as a true freshman at this level and he may be good enough to do that. You just need so much more than talent to make a real impact. Physical and mental maturity play a big factor in that and our upperclassmen all have that over the kid.

Now, after a year or two, watch out. That talent and potential could turn into something special.

Talent wise he is far ahead of where the rest were as incoming freshman. But unless he's technically sound already I say Red Shirt him. After picking up Henry we SHOULD have a solid four man rotation. If he blows the other guys away when he gets here then obviously start him, but I don't think he will do that his freshman year. Happens all the time where players like him get away with just talent in HS and don't focus on the fine points of the game. Coach him up a year and continue to get better.. And focus on school more for a year. He should be real good for us in a few years if he makes it to campus.

Aclone, I think the guy from Chicago you are thinking of was Jesse Beckom-sp. Last I heard he was an Olympic caliber bobsledder.

From an outside perspective I think you guys need to straighten out the run D before anything else. Against our common foes last year our bad D gave up 3.9 per carry (outside of QBs) and yours gave up 5.2 per carry. If you do that you could have a pretty solid D but I think you will miss your safety as a strong tackler with his speed is tough to replace completely. His experience and athleticism will be missed IMO.

When I watched you guys vs TTU last year it seemed like the DTs and LBs didn't play off their blocks well at all compared to what I saw in 09. I like your DE Lattimer in pass rush.

No need to mention my Bears awful 2010 defense, we made a coaching change to address it and we will see how much it helps.

We'll miss Sims and O'Connell against the run. They were there to cover up Neal and Parker getting dominated more than enough.

Maggitt is one of the most underrated players on this board. I would argue he is better than Lattimer

I agree about the Safety situation. I think Benton is a solid replacement but the other spot is going to be big too. OConnell was a very smart player who found himself in the good positions, he wasn't always athletic enough to make every play but he was always around the ball. Either the new guys back there are going to have to make a lot of plays or the DL is going to have to improve enough so the dbs won't be called upon as often in the run game.

Unless he is " Kid Dyno-mite !", I would just as soon have Pompey RS and give that knee time to completely heal.

Anyone know the real reason why Reggie Hayward got in on a handful of meaningless plays when he was a freshman? Because they weren't sure if they were going to be able to keep him eligible, so why redshirt him?

I'm not going to say that applies in the case of any other player, but if you consider Scott Haughton, there might be a point.
