Cool Iowa small towns

I was there yesterday, great town. Good at football and have a nice bike course. They have 2 teapots actually, one is by Red Oak, another is more . . . .

Again, it is actually a coffee pot, in honor of Folger's "Mrs. Olson," a native of Stanton.

Another vote for the Grotto in West Bend ... the pic doesn't really do it justice - its impressive to see.

Also, you Lansing folks (I didn't know people actually had computers up there) - Has anyone ever stopped at Effegy Mounds? I thought about taking a day trip with the wife to hike the trail - is it worth the time? Maybe check out Spook Cave while were at it... do either of these suck?

Oh, and a shout out to Dubuque. You used to suck something fierce - but the area down by the river is pretty cool now with the aquarium / Grand harbor / casino / and the best resturant I've been to in a long time the Star Brewery.

We took a 2 day trip along the southern 2 tiers of counties last week. Started at Bonaparte and Bentonsport. Drove west on highway 2. Stopped at the Dutchman's store in Cantril. Spent the night in Lamoni and returned across highway 34 the next day. Lot of small town county seats along the way, with the town square format.

The Bloomfield square is one of the coolest town squares I have seen. I have driven through Bloomfield on my way to games at Mizzou.

The Rumbles

I lived in Sac City most of life growing up, and besides the movie theatre and rainbow bridge, I never thought of Lake City being that interesting.

Although a few years back they had the Rumbles after the rodeo... That was fun.

The Rumbles? You've got to be kidding me. Are they still around? I'm in my mid-fifties and these guys were playing when I wasn't even old enough to go to the dances. One of the big sisters of a friend used to date one of the Rumbles.

Forest City has the Winnebago plant and Pilot Knob state park is near there as well.

Clear Lake has some cool history with the Surf Ballroom and such.

Mason City (River City) has a musicman square tribute to the Musicman as well as a handful Frank Lloyd Wright homes.

Besides the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, neighboring Kimballton has a nice replica of the Little Mermaid statute in Copenhagen harbor.

Here is a link to the one in Kimballton:

And to a photo the original in Copenhagen.
The Little Mermaid - Kimballton, Iowa

The statute is a tribute to the story by Hans Christian Andersen, and was very controversial (i.e., a nude) at the time. A friend of mine is a relative (distant, obviously) of the woman who posed for it. I give her a lot of grief.

I grew up in SW Iowa so really only know those towns but:

Elk Horn - Danish windmill
Kimballton - Mermaid
Manning - German barn and brick mainstreet
Audubon - Albert the Bull
Panora - Lake Panorama
Templeton - RYE!!!!!!!

While not from the area I can say that I enjoyed Effigy Mounds quite a bit and you can pretty easily burn up a full afternoon there(maybe more if you really like hiking. My only caution is that at least when we went the mosquitoes were thick and thus I advise bringing some heavy duty bug repellent.

Dubuque, while not all that small, has improved so much over the years. Back in the 90's it was pretty run down but the image as well as entertainment has improved significantly.

You have to spend a night in Remsen in NW Iowa. It is a crazy little town full of Luxemburgers. More bars per capita than any other town in Iowa, underground tunnels from prohibition times to explore if they will let you, blood sausage during Oktoberfest, and a beautiful church and grotto.

The home of Jared Homan... explains a little bit...
but in all reality... I was under the impression that Remsen is kind of a dirt ball town... just a bunch of drunks with no where to go and no time to get there in....

I was born in Forest City, raised in Fort Dodge, and went to ISU. I left in 1983 to join the Navy and now live in Roanoke,Alabama. Count your blessings. As far as I am concerned every small town in Iowa is cool compared to the backwater I have ended up in. I live in a dry county with few employment opportunities and a populace that believes they have found Nirvana. If not for some personal committments(in-laws) I would move in a heartbeat.

Wow, a dry county in Alabama filled with Religious Fanatics. That hurts to even type, let alone live there. You gotta make a run for it man!
