Congrats Tom Herman!

I remember when he was here and he wasn't very good.

It's really a shocker that the team with the least talent rarely moved the ball against teams with superior defensive talent. Almost as shocking as it was for his supremely talented OSU teams to move the ball against less talented defenders.

So how many former ISU coaches won a National Championship now?

McCarney @ Florida w/ Meyer
Gene Cheesesick @ Auburn
Tom Herman @ OSU w/ Meyer

Anyone else? Didn't Mack Brown, Jimmy Johnson, and Pete Carroll spend time at ISU?

How about

Mark Mangino, Oklahoma, 2000
Wally Burnham, Florida State, 1993

Herman made a brilliant move in his career, going to work for one of the best minds in CFB history. Now that he's on his own, will be interesting to see how he does.

This. I was never overly impressed with him here, but in hindsight I'd have had him stay :twitcy:

I said this last year when a similar topic about Tom came up. Obviously, you can screw things up if you are a terrible coach, but OSU has guys that just flat out make plays. There wasn't anything special about the design of the offense, block, hit the holes, throw the ball a mile accurately and if no one is open, go ahead and run for 20 yards.

Our offensive woes lie deeply in our offensive lines inability to push the defense out of the way and sustain blocks. We definitely don't have what OSU has as far as talent goes, but I think a lot of people would be surprised how much better we would be with just a few improvements on the offensive line.

Amen to this. Last night I had to just laugh watching a "third sting" QB make laser accurate pinpoint back shoulder throws and that OL just push Oregon out of the way. Meyer gets talent and he knows how to coach it.

Like others, I am anxious to see how Tom does on his own. My bet is he learned A LOT the last three years. I wish the timing would have worked out so that he could have been considered for the ISU head position. It would have been fascinating to see what he could have brought back here given his prior knowledge/experience with the program.

He's walking into a very good situation down there in that is team just won a bowl game.

Herman's a good OC, and last night he called an excellent game. His offensive line is good, but he's still a very good coach and did an excellent job of developing QBs at Ohio State.

You know, there has been a lot of Herman bashing since he left ISU, saying that he wasn't in charge and he was just running Urban's offense. This Grantland article states otherwise: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/c...-oregon-ducks-urban-meyer-tom-herman-offense/

When Meyer rejoined the coaching ranks and started searching for a coordinator who could mesh the newest trends with what Meyer had done before, he asked around for suggestions, and several of his closest friends in the business suggested the same name: Iowa State offensive coordinator Tom Herman... Herman, who will take over as Houston’s head coach after coordinating Ohio State’s offense in Monday’s title game, has helped morph the Buckeyes’ offense from Meyer’s traditional system into an updated version that carries many of the hallmarks of the team OSU will face in Arlington on January 12. Specifically, Herman has shifted the Buckeyes away from the single-wing-esque QB power runs that Meyer preferred during the Tebow years and that since-injured QB Braxton Miller leaned on while leading the Buckeyes in rushing in 2012... In contrast, Herman has based Ohio State’s offense around the inside zone: an inside, downhill running play that uses zone blocking to automatically adapt to the defense, a crucial trait when used with the no-huddle, another tactic now featured far more in Columbus than it ever was in Gainesville.
Many coaches, including Meyer, have said that zone blocking plays are “finesse” runs. Meyer has always viewed his offense as a power attack, albeit one run from the spread, but Herman helped convert him, resulting in Ohio State building its offense around the inside zone, with quarterback reads and receiver screens coming off that same basic action.

Brilliant? I'd describe working for Urban at OSU instead of Rhoads at ISU as "obvious".

No more football threads please. I propose that CW ban the entire football forum. Start it up on Dec. 12th or whatever next December and we can talk about the _______.

A little misleading since in those years, the defense was good.
