Conference realignment train coming down the tracks again?

Well - at least we now know who to blame...

Seriously. I even thought this exact thing as I deleted them and then again when I saw the article Sunday. There's been a precedence for this. I held front-row tickets to a cancelled concert for 18 months because there was a chance it was going to be rescheduled. I finally gave up and cashed them in only to have the announcement come out four days later that the concert was on again. I have a reverse-Midas touch.

Delany should be ashamed. What does Maryland and Rutgers bring? Purely a money grab. I guess there's never enough, but at least Nebraska was a brand name FB program with excellent facilities and attendance. Rutgers and Maryland are mediocre programs at best and the only thing they add are TV sets.

You're point? What do you think motivates the other BCS conferences that have expanded recently?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with it, but what reasons would you expect them to have for adding teams?

Coach K from Duke was just on ESPN. He thinks the ACC is in trouble. After ND signed on, he thought things were looking good, now?? Does he expect more school to leave the ACC?
ESPN also reported Boise St, San Deago St and BYU will stay in the Mountain West.
MONEY carries a HUGE stick. I may not like bringing more schools into the BIG 12, but we may have no choice.
Get bigger or you lose money to Big 10 SEC, Pac 12.
Who would bring the MOST $$$ and TV sets?
Florida St and Clemsen, they were looking a few months ago. I know people don't like ND, but they get top notch
TV every week. Should be fun seeing who goes where.
Go Cyclones.

So.. if you take FSU, Clemson, and try for ND.. who's the 4th? Pitt? LVille? VTech?

Maryland and Rutgers to the Big X? Totally baffling.

NCST seems more likely from that region. ?? Interesting. Why?

The reason I said NCST would be more likely is under the assumption that the Big Ten and SEC take more teams. Virginia would be a Big Ten candidate (AAU member) and VTech would be an SEC candidate (adds new state to their footprint). UNC, if they left the ACC, would be a Big Ten candidate. That leaves NCST hanging out alone.

Just a random opinion.

ND will stay Independent with their recent football success.

The Big XII taking FSU, Clemson, along with Pitt, sounds pretty good. The 4th team possibilities of VTech and LVille are not bad either.

If that happens, the ACC and Big East would likely try to make some sort of merger IMO.

Other than the TV markets, I really don't see the additions of Maryland and Rutgers adding anything. It seals the deal that the Big Ten remains a very mediocre football conference.

They would look like good choices. Since I am a farm boy my view is slanted some what, NC ST is a land grant school,
with ties to the research triangle and big time $$ for Ag research. Not a sexy choice, but they might be looking if things fall apart in the ACC.

Go Cyclones.

I agree.

Louisville is my top candidate for the next Big 12 member, but if this is a business decision, then the conference needs to go to Tobacco Road. Get the 4 NC schools, killing the ACC HQ and still have 2 open spots to get to 16. You have to think the Big 10 wants at least one of the NC schools, but if your at Duke/UNC is it worth the move if you lose the rivals that are just down the road?

It may not be a sexy football-focused move, but it beats the Big 10 & SEC to the punch, puts the rest of the ACC into panic mode and solidifies the Big 12 as a "Big 4" conference.

I would really like the idea of adding NC state. They would be a lot of fun to play

After the Big Ten taking Maryland and Rutgers, it is MORE about eyeballs than anyone could have imagined. Maryland is THE stepchild of the ACC. 90% of the people in NYC have never heard of Rutgers.

NCST is next to the bottom in the ACC. Raleigh-Durham and everything North Carolina is Duke/NC.

My choices are FSU and the ramblin wreck/Atlanta --both available.

If they could make more money joining a conference, why wouldnt ND do that. With their ACC deal they are half way into a conference now. As CFB move more to a playoff system, will they allow one or two teams to get into the playoff with out playing in a conference full time?

because they are ******.

Like many people here, I initially thought the Big XII should be targeting Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, etc. Those are all really good football programs, but maybe we should be thinking about this from a different angle.

The Big Ten may have the right idea, adding two teams with less football tradition. This makes the schedules more manageable for their power teams. Seriously, look at our schedule in the Big XII - Kansas is the only "easy" win, and even they were a top 5 team just a few years ago. In the Big Ten, everyone gets to play Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, Illinois, etc. They're just not as good top-to-bottom, and adding Maryland and Rutgers makes it even weaker. A good team has a much easier road to an undefeated season in that conference, and part of me wonders if our conference strength makes it harder to get a team in the NC. Kansas St. just couldn't keep it up every week, while Ohio State is still undefeated. Look at their schedule - some of those games are just as good as bye weeks. Shoot, look at how many bad teams are in the SEC for that matter. For us in particular, it makes it that much harder to make a bowl game every year. How many times have I read on this board, "If only we had Iowa's schedule..."?

I'm not saying we should actively seek bad teams. However, if money really is the main reason for expansion, let the conference focus on that. Maybe we could take one or two of the good teams I mentioned above and then some teams that are middle-of-the-road in the process (UVa, NC State, Houston, SMU, and Louisville come to mind as options). It could be better for us in the long run.

--BREAK--

From a purely selfish perspective, I would love to see UVa and/or VaTech in the Big XII. I've settled down in Richmond, so that would definitely benefit me. I've spent some time on the VaTech campus for my job, and I think we have a lot in common with them. They'd be a welcome addition in my mind.

The problem is, the B1G can afford to add those with less football power because they still pay the bills thanks to the way their conference network is structured. With our purely ratings-driven compensation, whoever we bring in only pays for themselves if they bring ratings, which generally means they have to either be a good brand now or been at least powerful enough in the past to have a brand that still gets viewers.

Yes TV rating matter but what matters more is cable companies willing to pay more for the Big 1o network than they do now. They are opening up new markets for their product. Hell why take the New York market and ISU is a better get and fit for the Big 1o than Rutgers.

The BIG 12 needs to be gunning for 16 too. Bring in FSU, Clemson, Miami, Louisville, BYU, and Georgia Tech.

I really hope the New York television providers give the Big 10 Network the middle finger when they come looking to force it on to basic tiers in that market.

I'd bet the deals are already in place, maybe not signed. Kind of like applying to the conference - schools don't officially apply until they know they'll get in.
