Comparing Iowa and ISU Recruiting--The Matchups

I disagree with the ones above. Unless you've seen both players in high school, which I doubt, about the only thing you can go off of is offer sheets and rankings, and the Hawkeye recruits beat out the ISU recruits in both.
Sorry. I actually watch both the videos, and listen to coach comments. Please don't make assumptions. I've also been doing this for over thirty years, including professionally. So I'd like to think that I might have some idea how to cut through the BS, and read between the lines.

I'll give one little example. Riley McMinn and David Irving committed to Iowa and ISU about the same time. At the time, both were about the same size. McMinn's rating and offer sheets were both better than Irving's. Seriously--which would you rather have? I knew what I was seeing the instant that I saw Irving's highlight video...

Not surprising that the Hawk fans object to certain matchups. :twitcy:

Don't take this the wrong way -- but who are you and why should I care what you think???? My analyses go to the bottom line and I have ISU kicking the hok's *** for at least 8 out of the next 10 years. And I admit I am nobody.
Don't take this the wrong way...I don't remember forcing you to read it.

Strange, I do this for the fun of it, and that's all that really matters. And if you really wanna know who I am, I could tell ya...but that doesn't really matter, either.

So you've been doing this "professionally" for over 30 years, but the only thing that you take into consideration when evaluating prospects is their size? Because reading your comparisons, you basically called prospects "even" based solely on their size and stature.

Not trying to be a d-bag, but since you brought it, do you mind telling who you are, or what kind of "professional" scouting experience you have?

You just out-blowharded rebecacy! That makes you king, I think.

All hail Aclone, Ruler of self important, know-it-all gasbags! May your reign be long and arduous.

Aclone, perhaps I am mistaken, but it sounds like you're being a bit touchy. One reason I enjoy your posts so much is the indepth analysis, the real meat, not the shallow "fluff" pieces that the print media nowadays is so accustomed to. Please pardon me if I have come not only to appreciate, but to expect a little bit higher level of performance from you.

Don't mean to sound like I'm on some high horse or something, so I'll wander along now...

Get over yourself.

Collin Bevins DL 6’5†250 vs Drew Ott 6’4†245

These two are also similar in a lot of ways. Each staff is excited about their sleeper defensive lineman—though I’m still not quite sure why, in one case. Still, to be fair, I’ll call it a draw. The difference isn’t that much. Yet. Edge: Even.

Wasn't Ott Nebraska player of the year?

Weird didn't know ISU had recruited Seeley. Well I went to high school with the kid but he was a small guy when I graduated.

Sorry. I actually watch both the videos...

I'm calling BS on that. Fleming, Ott, Morgan and Wilson would not be pushes (or edge: ISU, lol) if you've actually watched the tape. There's a reason most of the Iowa recruits have many more BCS offers. They're better.

And a Parade All America lineman. But him and Bevins are pretty much the same player, as you'd know after reading this thread.

Didn't you hear him, though? He's been doing this for over 30 years. And by "this" I'm sure he means "wowing people with his blinding intellect."

To Aclone's defense, AA did say in a chat a few weeks ago that CPR and staff feel Bevins will be an NFL quality D lineman before he is done at ISU. And CPR did compare him to Jordan Carstens on the recruiting video. Maybe that is a factor is his decision to not just roll over on the 2 star rating.

I haven't seen anything about Ott so I can't compare, just trying to decipher why he rated Bevins higher than most would.

As of right now Iowa has the superior recruiting class and it is not even close. If they get Kozan the gap widens even more.
Now three years from now it may be different but right there is not much comparison.

Well.. what would you expect them to say? Of course they're going to talk up their recruits. If this came from an impartial scouting analyst, it might mean something. I mean, come on, it's not like CPR is going to say, "let me tell you about this Bevins kid - now, he'll probably ride the pine for 4 years but if we're really lucky, he might crack the punt team by his senior season!"

Who cares how we match up with Iowa? How does the class match up with conference opponents that matter like purple Kansas?

FTR, I think a lot of the Rivals ratings are a product of PR and promotion. Hell, a few years ago Andy Kuempal of the Hawks was a 3-star prospect who did a great job of self promotion and got a good rating and schollie offers as a result. Don't recall him making an impact for the Hawkeyes. Talked with a person from his hometown shortly after he graduated who stated that Kuempal was over-hyped. That was his opinion, but how did Kuempal turn out?

Fact is that these rating services have to put people somewhere. And sometimes they get caught up in the hype. It is all a crap shoot. You are trying to project how a prospect will develop and whether they have the "potential" to be a very good player.

Of course there is some guessing involved but these services do a very good job. Just go look at some of the first round picks in the NFL draft alot of the them were in the rivals top 100. Additionally it is no coincidence that the teams with the best recruiting classes annually rank among the top teams in the nation.

I don't know and you don't know who is better. Bud Colin Bevins is from podunk Iowa. He doesn't get noticed by much but the King himself Kirk Ferentz liked him so much that he tried to take him away from Iowa State. I could care less about where guys from Iowa are ranked. I think rankings matter more in Texas, Florida, and Cali where the players are seen more and it's easier to judge

Wow, ACLONE, you sure know how to fill a thread with troll bait.

I hope you have some sinister plan to destroy all of the cockroaches that you've drawn into this thread.
