COLUMN: 5 thoughts on the CyHawk beatdown

The B12 looks to be the worse power five conference this year and we are now at the bottom. FCS teams now want to play us.

I love when we ***** about our tough schedule. The big 12 has been on the tracks to a train wreck since realignment. The poor national perception and resulting ****** recruiting is finally catching up with the league.

We'll still finish 8th in our best years though, so that's comforting.

I liked the white hats too. However, in true superstitious fashion, we should now bury them under Lake Laverne(.......or Lake Latrine as it was known in my time at ISU).

Yo CW please back the game day countdown and set it to the first MBB game. Please make it the exhibition game so we don't have to wait so long. # 56 Days. TIA.

I think FCS teams want to pay us to play - another brilliant scheme by JP. I am still bemused by the wholesale pursuit of DB's and Safeties - yes B12 is a passing league ( except us because we are the running team of the B12 - Wait) but to be a running team you need OL guys too! I am fully aware of the short turn cycle CMC had but with the Wizard of Manning he should have known the OL was a dogpile. Here we stand ( or crumple and weep as some are) over a mess of an O line? MW beaten in public about no effort and attitude? A really bad start by a HC with a fan fave. Is MW reading his press clippings and gaining a prima donna tude? I don't know and don't care - I see a HC that is floundering and has no answers. This did not happen in the MAC and he has no experience to draw on. OJT for en entire staff and an OC who has never had that responsibility is a train wreck for years. Look for staff defections at year end. This tight knit group will be fractured as the mess rolls along. Just another nutcup punch brought to us by JP - GO CLONES! Am sure there will be posters telling me to stay off the boards....ad nauseum. Think I will as this gets worse and worse. QB controversy? You need a QB for that to happen. Should have played Starcekevich (?)as he has a cannon. Can't be worse - Park is not the answer - he could not drive for a TD against the backups with Number 1 wr's. Penalties, foolish plays, zero running? Yeah - somebody tell CMC this is not 1989. Walden had 75-77 scolis - this team does not have 75 players worth a scoli. Maybe people should ease up on ol' PR - MAC level players don't fare so well in B12 either!

This is about as uneducated of a post as it gets..so with 2 months to recruit before signing day how many Oline do you think where available? CMC is challenging players..that is never a bad thing. CPR flat out blamed losses that were all coaching errors on players...ridiculous.

No one on this staff is leaving. Previous staff and S&C staff especially was a complete joke. We have Oline starting that should even be 3rd team right now because we've lost (10) Oline from 2013 and 2014 classes....(10) man. MW needs to stick his head down if there isn't a hole and try to make something happen or make an attempt to bust it to the outside like u see stud RB's do if nothing is there. Kinda like what u saw KENE do if nothing was there..Players are having the effort and attitude challenged and some don't like it. This is big boy football.

Thank you for the foreshadowing. I decided to take my blood thinner ,stroke medication first before the read I am sure that you did not want to write. Also, thank you for being honest and I hope you don't have a stroke either from having to write that piece and probably a few more this year like it ()with roasting marshmellows in your pocket:().
It is a beautiful day today folks... please enjoy life; there is more to life than football..... NEVER FORGET:cool:

This game was more about how good Iowa is rather than about how bad Iowa State is. Good luck with the rest of the schedule. Don't beat yourselves up - Iowa might be the best team you play all year.

Wouldn't get any argument from me.

Then again I was a 3 win this year guy, because coaches often over inflate the level of their talent when speaking to the press. They were not a good team for the last several years, they did not get a full recruiting cycle, the tea leaves all said its gonna be long year.

Re-building and re-modeling ain't pretty at the start. Dirt and dust everywhere as old crappy sheet rock is ripped out and structural weakness is exposed. Even worse when you have to live right in the middle of your re-model and look at the process every day. It's still pretty unsightly even as you start to put it back together. Ten more games this season. Looking forward to each and everyone of them to see if progress can be made.

This is premature. In the second half Iowa had one complete series without a running back. Another I think, but don't recall. Clearly working on pass protection. My point? Iowa has some areas they need to clean up. It's shocking to me as much as some of these guys got to play last year, and as glaring a deficiency as pass protect was last year, that is area is still such a work in progress.

With respect to ISU (and I'm obviously not an ISU fan), I've said this over and over. Three areas that can be fixed in a relatively short period of time. Offensive line. No reason for this as this is a position that can be recruited and developed without highly sought after high school players. Discipline and penalties. An example would be the ISU player not fielding the squib punt in the second half. That is the lack of a football fundamental, not a lack of talent. The entire offensive and defensive scheme. To attempt to outscore everyone in the B12 is absolutely crazy given where ISU is located, and given where ISU gets its players from. Even Texas, although still hurry up on offense, has gone to the "we're going to run the football, and we're going to stop your gimmicky offense". ISU really, really needs to do the same.

This is going to take time. Look back at Iowa replacing both coordinators. The one thing that continues to confuse me is the complete lack of understanding about how vital consistency in a coaching staff is, given what ISU is, which is not that unsimiliar to Iowa in this area. There seems to be almost a willful lack of awareness.

I've attended every Iowa / ISU game for quite a long time. Last night's game was a not a fun game to watch. I would hope both teams come away with enough teaching and coaching instances from it, but I always wonder if that is the case in games like this. Now I think Iowa's staff will be better at turning this game into a stepping stone, but my biggest concern is that this game didn't do either team any good.

I have no problem whatsoever admitting Iowa is VERY good. Yet..... Miami(Ohio), ISU, NDSU, Purdue, Illinois, PennState, Northwestern, Nebraska.... why don't you schedule a big boy? You'll WHINE about not enough respect come playoff time, yet other than finally getting Michigan on the schedule, you play the weakest teams in your conference. Whats with not scheduling Power 5 or ranked opponents to get your mad respect? Obviously Oklahoma, Texas, NotreDame, Stanford, Alabama, Arkansas, TCU, USC, etc., ALL do! There isn't one team in the first 6 or 7 games that will even come close to beating you. So why not get the national boys to notice with some real non conference beef?

Um I think many Hawk fans want to drop ISU and add a big boy, you pretty much put this up on a tee for them based on the post you made. Get ready...

QB controversy? There isn't a QB that has ever existed that can help this mess

That's not true. While QB isn't the only issue for Iowa State, it is an issue and has been an issue for a long while.

The staff came up with a nice game plan to start, gave the QB some easy reads and throws, and he just missed them. Plain and simple. Would a stud QB have won the game for us last night? Of course not, but the game got out of hand early by our inability to pick up a first down and complete the simplest of passes.
