It can be scary and uncomfortable to get a colonoscopy, but we know they save lives.

This can be a lighthearted and fun thread to discuss our experiences with colonoscopy.

I got my first at age 32 (since my mom had colorectal cancer at 42, it’s recommended to get one 10 years earlier). Then had a follow up at 37. One polyp on that one, so I’m on deck again at 40.

The preps were actually kind of fun as an experiment - it’s amazing what’s inside of you o_O

Had my first this year at age 52 (yep, doctors make bad patients, and I was overdue.) Completely painless, and my wife and I went out for lunch afterwards.

I'm a surgeon, and deal with colorectal cancer often. I can't tell you how many times I've treated asymptomatic colon cancer, found on a screening colonoscopy, but it's A LOT. By the time you have symptoms, it's often more advanced, and sometimes incurable. You want to pick it up and treat it PRIOR to symptoms!

What is the advice for someone who has been trying to get in for a year, and no luck? My doctor says he has called me in twice, but still nothing.

Sucks when the system makes it tough, but I’d recommend to be your own advocate.

You should be able to call around to GI docs in your area and see who has availability. You may then need to ask your primary care doc to put in a referral at the specific place that can actually fit you in.

Can you do one of those at home poop tests?

At my age, I have had two colonoscopies. Never had a polyp even. They suggest that powdered fiber stuff but wonder if they have to? I eat lots of raw fruit and veggies. Kind of hoping at some point there is a better alternative if I continue to not have any issues. I don’t react well to the anesthesia method.

As long as you’re eating plenty of fruits, veggies, and whole grains, there is 0 need for a fiber supplement - I think they get recommended by default because the average American diet is so poor

You can always get it without any sedation. Not the most comfortable - and not everyone can tolerate it - but I know guys that have done it because they have to work that day.

Fun is not the word I’d use

What type of anesthesia are you getting? Conscious, deep, or general? Could possibly ask to switch to a different type depending on your reaction.

Yes!!! I did this the first time and was honestly a bit disappointed, I think it was only like 5-6 pounds. I’d like to take that as evidence that my colon is slick as a whistle due to high fiber intake
