Trent Johnson makes $1.5 mil at TCU. Sure, he has experience, but it's TCU. Tubby Smith makes $1.6 mil at Tech (again, I know it's Tubby, but it's also Tech). It's baffling to me that JP appears to want to hand the keys to what could be a Final Four, Big 12 title-contending team to a guy meriting as little as $1.25 mil.

Yep, and sure it could work, but if you are talking about paying $3M to a guy with a proven track record I will gladly take that. I'll throw a few extra $$ to make it happen.

I'm getting really tired of spending all my time defending Chris and myself from crazies, breaking up arguments, burning through flaming hatemail and correcting everybody's way of taking what has been said and twisting it. I'm out.

I'm sorry Jeremy, but you bear a lot of the blame for this getting out of hand IMO. We've all kind of settled on the fact that TJ, Underwood, Prohm, Drew, etc were the level of candidates we're looking at.

But then all of the sudden you say that we're interviewing a few mystery candidates that would command between 3 and 4 million. That is what has sparked all this "jumping to conclusions" talk and "getting out of hand" talk that you speak of.

I don't blame you at all for passing along what info you have, that is great, but then don't expect posters on here not to speculate about those posts. I don't think that's being very reasonable.

This is the moment Jeremy goes radio silent until the announcement :)

I have stated for several days that we have a couple bigger names nibbling at the hook and they would command twice what JP initially set out targeting (primarily because his only target was TJ) until Leath stepped in. None of that is wrong. But most of that isn't what people are arguing about or sending me piles of PMs about.

I'd rather have a kick *** basketball program than a middling at best football program. I should say, we are a lot closer to having a kick *** basketball program than football. Put the funds in that.

I tend to agree with that as well, because I don't see us ever getting really good at football.

However, can JP pay all the bills with a lousy football program and a really good basketball program? I guess schools like KU, and Duke can do it, so maybe we could? I don't know that answer.

I didn't say the surprise candidates would take that (they'd be twice the amnt), but that was the target amount JP initially set out shooting for (i.e. TJ).

Thanks for the info, Jeremy. Don't let a couple knuckleheads stop you from sharing. There are MANY of us lurking and we are very grateful for the tidbits.

I guess Jerry Stackhouse is coaching now...would be interesting.

I apologize if you are talking about the private messages you are receiving. I thought you were talking about the posts on here, and I didn't see anything too out of hand on here.

If you're getting private hatemail, that is just insane and wrong on every level. I feel for you on that. That is beyond stupid.

We're all passionate Iowa State fans, and that is great, but it's WAY out of line when it goes past just being passionate about ISU and turns hateful. Sorry to hear that.

I can only tell you that a coach that at some point in their career had no previous head coaching experience, has won the NCAA tournament every year of its existence.

Great stat. Not sure it means anything but it's a great nugget.

I've said before that anyone who has a 60% success rate on new hires should be considered an expert. No experience on a high level/profile job is dicey.

Interesting to see how this plays out. I'm tired of the old coach. I'm ready to dislike the new guy

The answer to your question is no he cannot.

The market is in ISU's favor then.

Give me a coach right now making $1.5 million or less that you would pay "3+ or 4 million".

Just give me your honest options. Neither of you will. Because it would sound ridiculous.

The market is more important than what the individual coach currently makes.
I already gave you an example. Smart was making 1.8. You may not believe it, but we would pay 3 to 4. Like I said, there are many guys not on that list making 1.5 to 2 that would be great hires that would need 3 to 4 to come to ISU. Of course, look at Smart. He passed on many raises you think coaches wouldn't pass on. As did Stevens prior to jumping to the NBA.

You'll get it eventually. A guy at Michigan or Pitt will need much more to go to leave their current situation for ISU than what it would take other schools to get them.

So you're saying Scott Drew is interested?

Brey and Few would fall into that 3.0 million dollar range. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the Mystery candidates was from a Big 12 school and is a great recruiter.

Basketball Impact on Football

Unless most people on these boards are willling to up their Cyclone Club and season ticket payments, money is a barrier to ISU paying its hoops coach $3-4M a year.

Whatever we pay our MBB coach becomes the starting point if we are looking for a new FB coach next fall. If I'm Leath and Pollard I would be much more inclined to dangle $3-4M in front of a proven P5 head football coach and see if I can hire a basketball coach for $1.5-2.5M annually. I know history/success in MBB is much better, but football revenue is what fuels an athletic department. It would be nice to see JT with a seating capacity around 70k in the next decade! A guys gotta dream and no I ain't smoking the Mary Jane.

Hopefully this is easier to read, most of it is what I posted a week and a half ago...

1- We CAN afford up to $5 million if we really wanted to.
2- JP has his preferred budget of 1.25-1.75.
3- Leath stepped in to make sure JP's preferred budget didn't become a stumbling block.
4- The "known" candidates would all fit within JP's comfort zone.
5- The unknown candidates would be much higher than JP's comfort zone.
6- Goal is still to decide by mid-week.
7- One of the two surprise candidates may be pulling out (still trying to confirm with an additional source).
8- I'm told one of the candidates that interviewed has since been informed he is no longer a candidate, also trying to confirm.

Don't blame you one bit. Lot of hate and bitterness around here. A sincere thanks for your posts. Thanks.

Anyone else feel like CF forums have all turned into a big old Thunderdome where we've ate each other alive over the past few weeks?

Catching steam. here are Bomani Jones's thoughts:

Bomani Jones retweeted Jeff Goodman
oh? this could be great for both sides.
Bomani Jones added,
Jeff Goodman @GoodmanESPNIowa State interviewed several guys this weekend. One name that wasn't mentioned who interviewed, per source: NC Central's LeVelle Moton.

I was wondering all night what Bomani was thinking. NOT.
