He regressed as coach at UofM, 11-2, 8-5, 7-6, 5-7, sounds similar to a trend we just went through, I get that the university was a mess, we are in a bad situation.... I hope everyone sees this....
I'm open to the idea of Hoke. But it would depend a great deal on what his staff would look like. No doubt, ISU would run a style that fits the makeup of our current roster, and recruiting would be much improved were he hired. The guy does have two major turnarounds to his credit, and has been coach of the year in three different FBS leagues as a head coach. When comparing to short term coordinators and position coaches we are likely considering as many are likely to do here, that is a huge difference.
Not that Minnesota is competing for a national championship, but their program has improved significantly under Kill and it seems like it would have been sustainable too, if Kill was able to continue coaching (time will tell if Claeys is able to continue the momentum).
My point is that Minnesota and Iowa State have basically had similar success (or lack thereof) over what I would consider relevant history.
Someone like Jerry Kill is what Iowa State needs. He worked his way through the ranks, winning everywhere he went. He was able to develop talent better than most and his teams played very fundamentally sound football. He also was able to keep his staff in tact for nearly 20 years - that's incredible. Kill also had the midwest "fit" and is loved by the Minnesota faithful and HS coaches.

As an aside, coaching search threads are a fickle beast. They draw me in with intrigue of actual information, but it's 98% just posters throwing **** at the wall and at each other. But I still consume it all, and time just ticks by, and when I look up, I've accomplished nothing.

Don't let the mud slinging slop field of UM football make your mind up for you. There's a lot of politics there that you don't have to deal with here.
so the politics made him lose a ton of games? It's not like they fired him for winning 7 games a season, if that was the case you could argue politics.
He didn't but the last 3 HC have been former DC's. I hope JP sees the need to break the pattern.

Stitt will end up with a major D1 job at some point. I think it would be an outside the box hire that could work.
If you get a guy like Hoke, who in an article that was pasted earlier says that he wants to call the Defense, you could bring in Loney as OC/OL Coach with Sage as QB Coach and run a pro influenced style of play.
This gives you some differentiation from what the rest of the conference is running, but you have a pro caliber Offensive Line Coach on staff. Sage has a very good football mind and would be able to teach the QB's a ton while having a lot of credibility considering his history. He could also be groomed for OC when Loney retires.
I don't see an up and comer out thinking the other Coaches in this conference. From Stoops down there are good coaches at every school.

He was really unpopular with the UM Boosters and Administration, it was public, and they all wanted Harbaugh or bust. The program was invested in his failure. This would easily affect the players confidence in their Coach.
The only thing that makes we wary of Hoke is the Mangino experience, but that is probably unfair. Mangino was someone who was supposed to have changed, but hadn't.
I think the Jerry Kill-type in this search is probably Brock Spack at Illinois State.
I will be happiest if our new coach has ZERO ties to Iowa State. What part of decade upon decades of futility do you wish he was associated with?

If we are going the DIII-route, I'd rather get Leipold from UW-Whitewater (now at Buffalo)
