The past few years we've just been a few plays from being a bowl team, and this year were pretty competitive against Iowa, OSU, TCU, and KSU. Pretty easy to fall farther from that to not being competitive at all, when we really just need the next step. Get that next step and then take advantage on the recruiting side and then things can improve.

It isn't Fleck hate at all. Obviously the guy would bring in a better quality football recruit. His oddities notwithstanding, Fleck has won just four games against teams with winning records in three years. If Jamie is willing to spend the money to make the right choice, Fleck seems like more of a fallback option.
If that is how things work, then We should have the team coach itself and save the money. It seems like ISU is a place that loses.
Exactly, time to break the cycle. People think its time to take a risk and what they don't realize is we have been taking risks with every hire - time to examine each candidate and hire the one with the best experience and reduce the amount of risk for once.

As a guy who is not impressed by the vast majority of names in the lists I've heard, I think THIS is the best bit of info on this thread.
Out of curiosity, how much can be put into these updates of "one candidate up, one down"? I assume this is JP speaking to a donor to CW.
This is a big deal in my eyes as well. Guy clearly has an eye for RB talent.
Plus, it seems Campbell has had some pretty dang good offensive lines. Something ISU must have to have a chance of being successful.
So you're saying Chizik was a failure because he was a Christian - get a grip. Chizik was a failure because he was a poor football coach - which became evident when Malzahn quit being his OC to become a head coach and he sunk that program.
I couldn't care less whether our next coach is a born-again Christian or a Pastafarian - just win.
Coaching searches are exciting, but I can't stand the random clueless posters that only come around at big times like these, and proclaim the most absurd opinions.

I think there is a difference between being risk adverse and just plain not liking a particular person. When you talk to donors, they like the idea of Fleck but don't like Fleck himself. As one donor put it "he may be the shiny new toy, but he comes across as an arrogant ****** both on the field and off, from what I've seen and heard and would have a very short shelf life".
Ive heard more than one person compare him to Kiffin 2.0, fwiw.
Personally, I would tend to share some of those opinions, though maybe not to the extreme. I think he may be a good coach but I don't think he'd fit well here for many reasons. You don't need to take the least proven or most odd to make a case for the highest risk/reward.

The highest reward part is that he's by far the best recruiter of the bunch, and has a history of stealing recruits from B10 teams at Western freaking Michigan, which is what we would need.
And how many boosters have actually met the guy?
I thought he was on a plane flight from Chicago to Detroit not long after the game.
