Plenty of examples of assistants being duds. Plenty of examples of mid-major coaches being duds. Nobody here has a crystal ball. I just want someone that will continue efficient, uptempo offense. Prohm and (by all accounts) Otz fit that bill.

That's a terrible reason to hire someoneI'm a Otz fan over the rest for these reasons:
I don't like ISU being a "stepping stone" job, and Otz is the least likely (I think, though thought that about Dreamy) to leave, if successful, with his ISU connections. I feel better about ISU having the control in the situation.
Just because someone has HC experience, doesn't mean that would be more successful here. Every situation is different...things could go either way with whoever.
If Otz gets it, he will have a pretty easy first year as HC with this roster. Easiest situation to obtain HC experience.
I don't think these mid-major coaches are better. IMO, they are similar. I will take Otzelberger because of familiarity and because he actually worked with Fred Hoiberg......the others did not. And Fred hired him.....TWICE.

I dont get this assessment by many.
He already left once when he thought it would be better for his career, taking a lateral (at best) move to washington. Sure, he's spent many years at ISU, but as evidenced by the fact that he couldnt even get a sniff from Drake its not like he was turning town big opportunities to stay here most of those years.. it turns out being a part of a ****** program like Gmac's doesnt do much for the ol' resume. He bolted for Washington once he thought he'd maxed out what he could do here for his resume and it seems obvious why he came back (an opportunity at this position, which is likely greater if he is on the ground).
Also, really... i think this should be about the last factor anyways. Id rather have a coach come in and succeed for 5 years and move on and leave things better for a replacement than hire a mediocre option that wont go anywhere. For some reason ever since the Chizik departure everyone puts this huge premium on 'he'll stick around' or 'he has iowa ties', when that really shouldnt matter. Neither Larry or Tim were from around here, but they were solid hires.
Familiarity and worked with Fred are extremely weak best attributes. JP retained him for the next HC after McD, and Fred hired him on his way out, BFD.
This candidates who have surfaced in this search are as exciting as the past 2 Iowa State bowl games.....Little panache and lack of excitement....
I have seen NO evidence that he even applied for the Drake job. At least provide some evidence if you make an allegation.
Your obtuseness and stupidity are really getting old.
But not all deficiencies are created equal. Otzelberger's holes are GIANT compared to the holes in even these other rather underwhelming candidates.Otzelberger along with three mid-major candidates are known interviewees for the job. None of them are big time candidates. All of the have deficiencies in their resumes.
And your reasons about Otzelberger are made up opinions of yours and not fact. Since you hate Otzelberger so much, I am sure you are hopeful that he is NOT retained by the new coach if Otz is not named HC. After all, WHY would you want such a terrible coach in your opinion?
Agreed. I'm not jumping up and down about the options, but would be relatively excited about all 3. The more I hear about Drew the more I like him.People weren't excited about Floyd or Eustachy either, but it was clear they could coach.
These guys have all won multiple conference titles, and shown they can get the most out of a team...all except one.

Working with Fred is a huge plus. We want our program to continue in the manner that Fred was running things. We are not wanting a new direction. Pretty stupid to claim that familiarity with Fred's methods and style of play and actually working with Fred are extremely weak attributes. In fact, they are some of the strongest arguments in elevating Otzelberger to be HC.
Look in a mirror. I miss the days where you contained your posts to the cave so most could avoid your terrible posts. Its fairly common knowledge and was reported on by many at the time. I know Keith Murphy mentioned it and I believe CW knew about it as well. Not getting any interest was a big reason he left ISU. Even beyond that, he still wasnt getting any interest in many jobs this last season, the two jobs he was up for barely paying any more than an assistant coaching gig at ISU.

He's a bad option as HC because he doesnt have the resume and because ISU should not be taking that big of a risk at this point in time. And yes, those risks are much more pronounced in TJ than they are even in these underwhelming candidates. Plus the fact that we can retain every single benefit he brings to the table by just keeping him on as an assistant means there's no benefit in promoting him to HC and missing out on someone else's talents. Id be fine with keeping him *as an assistant* because he's done a decent job in recruiting for someone else, which is all we need in him as an assistant. Just because someone would be a terrible option to promote to a company CEO doesnt mean they arent perfectly capable at their lower level position.
You have spent loads of time telling us how terrible a coach Otzelberger is. And then make the argument that he should be retained as an assistant. If he is a bad coach get rid of him.

I guess I forgot it would be too much to ask for, for Iowa State to make a splash hire, like a current or past power 5 coach or someone of that ilk. Typical Iowa State hire....People weren't excited about Floyd or Eustachy either, but it was clear they could coach.

Actually it was FRED who retained Otzelberger from McDermott's staff. FRED said that it was a priority to keep Otz on staff and made him associate head coach.
When Matt A. left, Fred hired him again. So he was sought out and hired by Fred TWICE.
