Coach Prohm Gets Extension

I'm not enthralled with adding that many years but anymore you have to do it to show commitment for recruiting purposes so we have to live with it. It's the landscape.

the other thing- i didnt see a salary increase in the announcments i saw. Was there one or much of one?

Because he's pretty low on the pay scale right now for big 12 coaches. Pollard could have given years in exchange for pay, which he has done in the past, and can work out better for ISU in the long run.

I haven't seen it either and wondered the same thing.

This is right on. Step 1 is getting the players. He has to continue to do that. Scott Drew was a bad coach, much better now. Prohm has some clear deficiencies and some clear strenghts, and is going up against some brilliant basketball coaches in this league. I think we can all agree to that. He isn’t naturally blessed with a genius basketball mind. He is young though, and if he is honest and self critical, he should get better. I think he will, hard to watch at times now, but there is no reason he can’t manage guys better, utilize talent better, force his style of play on on opponent, and get better on game day. It’s like anything else, with more experience he should get better.

He is really quite inexperienced vs most of our league, and it shows a lot, but he should get better in time. For now he has to keep the talent coming until that happens.
I just hope I’m alive to see his improvements as a coach for the Big 12 and to be top competitor in the NCAA. Losing the first game against Ohio St. hurts. And he had no apologies for it! His focus was “I did a great job except for 3 weeks this season.” BS! ISU deserves a top tier coach that can make us one of the best! One that the best recruits want to be here!

I just hope you aren’t an Iowa State fan.

He doesn't owe you or any other fan a damn apology.

Stupid post...

I would expect a high level coach with high expectations would acknowledge losing in the first round to a lower ranked team as a disappointment and not “argue” how good they were “except for 3 weeks.” Some people like me, hope and dream for ISU to be a real contender and win the NCAA tourney! That’s shocking that you call people like us “losers” I tend to think of us as “WINNERS”. Lol!

Were you equally critical of Hoiberg's "ho-hum results" with NBA talent like Monte, Niang, BDJ, Naz, Royce White, as well as Kane, Thomas, Hogue, and Ejim?

I actually have been. I think Fred underachieved with those teams as well.

My point remains. I don't dislike Prohm, and I don't necessarily think he's done a "bad" job. I just think the next few years will tell us alot, and an existing contract that expired in 2022 made sense in my mind. I think by then we will have a much better idea where he has steered the program, whereas now I think the verdict is very much up-in-the-air. But I do appreciate other's points about the value of a long-term contract for recruiting purposes.

Can you link me Wisconsin, kstate, Cincinnati and Marquette coaches apologies please. I’m curious to see what they all said.

Hoiberg, yes, but they each demonstrated it took them 1 year of poor results to re-stock. Hoiberg had to do it immediately and Prohm had to do it after 2 years of NBA talent.

BTW, I'm a huge fan of Hoiberg. I also think Prohm still has a lot to prove, but I think many on this forum nitpick his weaknesses without a comprehensive comparison between him and past coaches, and him against any current objective metric. I am optimistic about the future of the program under Prohm, and think there is a greater than 50% chance that in 2-3 years, he will have demonstrated enough success that he'll be indisputably the best coach in ISU's history (ie a regular season championship, multiple Sweet 16s, an Elite 8 and possibly a Final Four). I'm really happy it appears we will get to see this play out now.

Who started with better players?

As a staff member I’m disappointed that you can’t respect another’s opinion on a fan site. Just because I differ on what I think we should strive for doesn’t make me NOT a fan. You couldn’t be more wrong. You’re in the wrong job.

1. It's not a "job".
2. Respect is earned.
