Coach Prohm Gets Extension

Woo we got the Paul Rhoads of the hard wood till 2025. Lowering expectation meter drastically.

New settings calibrated at 5th place in the conference, first round NCAA tourney loss, with 60% likelihood of bubble team.

Hilton attendance down roughly 3% APY

Frustration of inbounds plays, offensive execution, and off court drama up roughly 10% APY.

Going to be a great half decade guys.

I’ll take your season tickets off your hand for you.

You mean the year we lost to UAB in the 1st round? Yeah we have plummeted from that high bar!

You are right. I will admit I have probably rode to high of standards for the program since about Monte's 2nd season. Its been a hard fall back to reality. I just have to deflated feeling like I did during the Greg McDermott years though. Been tough to shake.

Continuity is good. The way he represents the university is nice. But his main job is to coach. I'm just not convinced he's worth a 6-year extension with what we know. Would've liked to see how we perform next year first.

If we have a roster of Lard, Wigginton, THT, Solo, Jacobsen, Haliburton and Conditt back, the expectation needs to be higher than 23-12 and fifth in Big12. If the university is going to invest in continuity, I'd like to see our coach show continuity in the way our roster plays. Consistent effort, players held accountable in-game, strategic development. He's a high-major recruiter and a high school level strategist. That works at the mid-major level. But in one of the best conferences with lots of great coaches, that's a shaky formula. He needs to improve, and I don't think we needed to commit to such a lengthy thing without getting another season of information. It sounds like SP is a good life coach. But he has a lot of growing to do to become a good game coach.

If those thoughts make me a "hater" and not a concerned fan that hasn't seen in-game ability from a COACH, so be it. I foresee a lot of *dislike* coming but few/no rebuttals.
I absolutely love Coach Prohm. In fact a lot of the Prohm haters make me love him more.

But you are acting like what you are saying is some crazy take. I love Prohm and hope things work out and he is here forever.

But I also share your points of concern. Prohm absolutely needs to get better in-game. He's a humble dude and would probably admit that if asked right now. He can identify talent that is under the radar like Solomon Young and Tyrese Haliburton and pull in top talent like Wigginton and THT. I think he heads the program up the right way. I absolutely love what he has done bringing back older players each summer. I think even thought he is from the south, he represents Iowa values and fits in great with the feel of Iowa State.

But he absolutely needs to get better in other facets. I don't think even the most die hard Prohm fan would say he didn't. I think at times during games he should rely on more set plays especially when the guys are in a funk on offense. I think he should give more rope for some dudes to earn more time. Remember when we were all clamoring for Solomon Young over Merrill Holden? More Conditt this year? Giving those guys even just 2-3 minutes a half can do a whole lot for building down the road. He probably also shouldn't have such a long leash for some dudes. When THT jacks up a step back 3 and has only made 1 I believe all year, dude needs to come out of the game for some coaching. That type of hero/Iso ball isn't what was making this years team so good.

But even despite those things, I can still think he is a good coach and can get better. Look at how everyone use to crap all over Scott Drew 6-7 years ago. How he was a bad in-game coach. Could only recruit. Etc. Now I'd say Scott Drew is in the top half of the league and is a pretty good in-game coach. What he did this year with injuries is pretty crazy. Prohm is doing a lot of good and can and probably will get better where he is deficient.

I sure hope he does a lot of winning next year, that way the haters lives can get really busy again.
Its gunna be a long offseason

- I am good with the extension. Turmoil is never a positive.

- I agree with many that we underachieved, and a lot of that can be laid at coach's feet.

- But this year did not sting as bad as the UAB fiasco, and we did have a rocking time in KC.

- Probably most impressed with JP. Love how he just makes a decision and gets the job done. No messing around.

Idk how to feel about this. Not really a Prohm hater, but we have to see an improvement for this to be a good thing. We can’t continue to underachieve. I like him as a guy and everything, I’m just not totally sold on his coaching.

I think we're locked in a bit longer than we ought to be with his limited growth so far.
