Coach Otz

I was a little disappointed that we haven't seen the crisp ball movement and movement without the ball that we had seen earlier in the season but then I remembered that we have been facing elite defenses in very physical games. Freedom of movement isn't a real thing so that weave motion is going to be impeded. This team is so much better when the ball doesn't stick though.
This. The first four games of Big 12 play have been against elite defenses and with each game that goes by teams are scouting us better. Some of our better wins have been against terrible defensive teams (TTU being an obvious exception).

I was in Brooklyn for both games and Xavier and (especially) Memphis we’re no where near the defense we’ve seen the last 4 games. Not even close.

This really is a brutal stretch to start conference play.

Agreed, lot of upside potential with TJs system. I think this team will grow into it some yet this year and future talent will help as well.

Still way ahead of the curve I expected.

Wait until we get a team with more natural 3 pt shooters that still plays this D.

It’s crazy. Look at the chaos already around the league. Going to be a wild year.

to think that @OU was arguably the most winnable game of our first 6 is nuts.

disappointed as I am with our conference record right now, I put it in that perspective. We’re right there snd no question highly competitive. Could be 3-1 instead of 1-3.

And how many teams in the country would be better than 1-4 right now? Maybe 5. 10 if they catch some breaks.

we’ll continue to drop in the rankings, but think somewhere between 10-20 is about right.

feeling like Saturday is a huge game for us.

I'm going to preface this by saying I am not disparaging TJ at all as he is clearly the CEO of this team, and people are quick to jump all over one another here.

But, my question is how much of what we are seeing is TJ vs his supporting staff (Green, etc.)? TJ is very active on the sideline during the game, but his assistants seem to be more involved than I've ever seen. He seems to consult with them pretty much constantly mid-game and I've noticed a couple times the past few games where the timeout huddles have been led by assistants. Not sure I've seen a group of assistants so actively involved in games (or perhaps I've just never watched/noticed).

Just an observation. Part of being a good leader is knowing how to let others contribute and building a team to compliment your strengths.

I think it is hand in hand. I think he has some assistants who are valuable, he trusts, and make him a better coach. Even with Prohm, I didn't just blame him, but wandered why one of his 3 or 4 assistants couldn't come up with a way to get the ball inbounds. It wasn't just him in my opinion. On the other end of the spectrum I think you are finding that Coach Mark Adams of Texas Tech was a huge part of Chris Beard's success there.

I might be exaggerating, a bit.

There is not a situation where TJ doesn't have a plan at least. Execution isn't consistent but it is clear he always has a plan.

Dude was going a bit Weber last night along the side line though, but I'll allow it
Ha...we said the same thing about comparing some of his sideline movements Weber...but damn, after the no-movement Steve, it at least shows an engaged coach.

Not sure if anyone saw our inbounds plays, but guys were so open for layups and the inbounder just didn’t want to hit them without thinking about it. Those split seconds cost us a couple buckets. I like Tamin as our trigger man going forward.
Yes, hit Grill on one early but he missed. That cutter around the block was open 2-3 more times.

Certainly. I try to keep remind myself.

On the other hand, part of me thinks, "Man, if we're soooo close to nabbing more than 1 of the first 6, could we maybe get at least one more, while it's there for the taking? I thought last night was gonna finally be one...

And this past Saturday.

The hope is it doesn't turn into 'well they were really close until....' for too long.

Did you watch Fred coach? He let Lutz & Sattler do a lot of coaching during timeouts. Especially the first few years.

It's nice to see adjustments as teams have figured us out. Nothing against TJ but at OU, Moser outcoached him in the 2nd half. TJ came back against a hall of fame coach, mixed some things up and outcoached him last night.

Good question. Great answer in bold as well. The HC gets the credit because he hires, he decides who is on the team, he decides when to take advice and when to go his own way. That’s why CEO’s of large companies get paid so much. Their decision making affects everyone, and they get paid for that pressure and to not waffle and make decisions.

I care deeply about this basketball team which I didn't think was possible in 2022. Great job by TJ. Would have been amazing to have that one yesterday but it doesnt't take the shine off this season at all.
