Coach Otz Needs More Technicals

I liked the Fred style. When there was something, he would wander by th ref and say and/or point something out during play. He didn’t go Larry style on them but he was pointing out things he caught that they didn’t. You can work the refs without screaming.
I agree, and if people are watching they can see TJ quietly in a ref's ear every time there is one within earshot. Refs generally don't mind, "Hey, I'm seeing them do this to my guys. Can you watch that for me?" But generally they get tired of guys going totally ballistic on them.

I do watch but I don’t really see that. I usually see him biting his nails; which he has done less of.

So...was TJ not after the refs in the WV game?

Because what was he doing since it looked like he was after the refs and was fairly animated?

And while he's not flailing around he looks to be talking to them quite a bit in other games.

Take my word for it or others who have said it in this thread. He is quietly talking to them and you can often see him gesturing toward spots on the floor as he does so, so I don't think they are talking about the weather.

;)

Has he had a T this year?

And bringing Iowa in to this is pathetic.
They have no "ref-working" strategy , they're entitled babies.

Contrary to popular belief, a coach getting technicals does not equal better treatment by the officials.
THIS. It's mostly done to try to let the players know that they need to be battling more. Sometimes they respond, other times they don't. Self's T he got vs. Baylor resulted in no different treatment by the refs, who continued to allow wrestling match to happen on a basketball court, and it didn't result in his players playing less lethargic. Might as well not waste the 2 points.

Working the refs is a skill. Maybe TJ does it in a more quiet fashion during conversations during time outs or whenever, and maybe that is effective. I don't think anyone is advocating for TJ to stomp around like Mad Francis or to have a constant look of shock/befuddlement/where am I? on his face like Weber, but put me in the camp that thinks riding the refs pays off. Self is a master at this, I say TJ takes a few pointers from him on this front.

I have no respect for coaches who get technicals just because it's the thing to do. Contrary to popular belief, coaches who act that way are NOT doing themselves any favors. Officials hate them.

TJ keeps it real. He is his true self and not a fake tough guy.

TJ was subtly getting into it with the refs at home against WVU. Rode one of them pretty hard going back up the court a few times.

There's a way to get into em without showing them up. Ego battles get into a passing match that has the potential to start a grudge that won't advantage your team.

Watch TJ closer. He's measured, but he's FAR from a pushover.

And Self/K/Roy/Huggins, they're not swaying the refs because they stomp and shout, they're swaying bc they are HOF coaches.

If I were a ref for Iowa I'd be tempted to call something further just for entertainment purposes as the tantrums ensue.

They also know it gets the crowd going one way or another.

I remember in 2013 Self got T'd up on purpose in Hilton in the first half because he knew it would take the air out of the balloon. He even winked at the crowd after they settled down.

Yep. HOF coaches with reputations for having good teams are going to get more leeway from refs. They are also given longer leashes when they throw tantrums.

Given that calls vary between teams, between halves and sometimes between possessions, I'm impressed how some of the coaches are able to keep it together. Then, add an arena/stadium full of people encouraging you to lose your **** on a ref and it's pretty amazing the level of composure some coaches have.

TJ just gonna stand there with his arms crossed and take these putrid calls at home?

Probably doesn't change the outcome of this game, obviously since we look like middle school girls, but damn... I would like to see some emotion.
