Looks like we might leap-frog a few of these teams this weekend.

Great point here. We have a murderer’s row lineup developing right before our eyes.

What’s exciting to me is that you have Ech and Chittum wrestling, what their 7th or 8th folk style match for each of them in about 3 years. They go up against the best in the country in back-to-back weeks, and they are right there with those guys.

Does anyone have a doubt that Chittum wins the next match vs Franek or Stanford? I don’t.

It’s just too bad that we don’t have a potential AA at 141 in the lineup. AMIRIGHT crabby????

Will kind of backtracked and looked back at Munoz after the fall. I wonder if he thought he might have choked him out.
He was probably caught off guard by his mom about having a stroke standing next to the mat.

We’d already have one there with Redding anyway. At this point, Redding is way more accomplished than AE. R12. Has AE won a match that we don’t think Frost or Redding would have won too? Not that I’ve seen.

Something about close losses and hand grenades, right?

Come the end of this tournament that might change. So far the results are what they are.

So, I didn’t have a plan to watch much of this, but tested positive for COVID, so I re-subscribed to Flo and set up my isolation room to watch pretty much every minute of ISU yesterday. What a great way to isolate! Here are some random thoughts:

  1. This team is DIFFERENT than anything in the last at least 20 years at ISU in conditioning and attitude. (At least most of them)
    1. There is no ‘give up’ when they get behind. They fight until the final whistle.
    2. There is no ‘coasting’ to victory when ahead. They are driving for extra points all the time.
    3. They do not ‘gas’. Many of them do not even seem to be breathing hard. The conditioning improvement has been remarkable.
    4. The improvement on bottom probably has to do a lot with the above, but I can’t recall anyone giving up riding time. Only once I recall Ech getting rode to the end of a period. He is still a bit ‘nervous’ to go under but others have improved dramatically. Casey in particular was getting rode consistently last year and that issue is seemingly gone (weight cut might have something to do with this also)
  2. We can really make some noise in March. Without doing a ton of research, I would rank our chances at AA in order:
    1. Carr - duh
    2. Ech – He’s so close. Just needs to finish matches
    3. Casey – Come out ready and stop digging yourself a hole and he’ll dominate
    4. Frost – 3,4,5 are virtually tied, but Frost & Yonger have tougher brackets. Biggest ‘surprise’ in years here.
    5. Yonger – Has looked amazing, but continue to worry if he get’s stuck on bottom against a bigger HWT.
    6. Feldcamp – Huge bounceback, but you’re not going to win matches like the Munoz one consistently.
    7. Chittum – I really think he’s right there with the best of them, but 157 is absolutely stacked.
  3. 125 and 197 are holes, but we pretty much knew that so no use getting worked up over it. They each tease us occasionally but at this point it is what it is.
EDIT: to add to the first bullet. I kept thinking while watching them I see a bunch of 'little Metcalf's' out there. Either Brent is finally finding his footing at a coach or just finally has the athletes that 'buy in', either way I'm excited.

If you can't see the difference between Redding and Ech I don't know what to tell you. I get your overall point about a W is a W and a L is a L, but Ech's losses against top guys have seen him fighting until the end and coming milliseconds away from pulling the W. They are not the 'keep it close' variety. And his wins have been dominant. And to Tigerguy's point, that's with him still adjusting to a new style. Will always respect Zach for giving his all to the program and sticking with it, but Ech's potential is light years beyond Redding.

Who isn’t going for Michigan? I can’t believe they’re that far down the leaderboard.
Looking at Intermat rankings and comparing to who Michigan sent, they are missing Cannon at 133 (ranked 7) and Rodgers at 184 (ranked 22). They brought everyone else. Griffith early departure isn't helping, but otherwise I think that they are underperforming - just a guess without a deeper dive.

I get it. Ech looks really good. But if you want to party on me for my prediction, can you at least let him get a top 20 win? Preferably a top 12 one.

All I ever said, was that his results in the past didn’t show me he looked like an AA. Now the eyeball test so far this year is showing me he looks like an AA, but I still want to see the results before I get too excited. Everyone thought Casey was a title contender after losing to Woods last year. Let’s let AE beat some good wrestlers before we crown him.

Casey was dinged up shortly after that and I don't believe that he ever was able to work to his potential. In the end he had a bad year - only made the blood round. Geez, what a loser.

Depending on today's results I can see us jumping from the 10-12 range to about 7. The potential to climb higher is certainly there now.

It absolutely is. I can’t imagine anyone in the country being excited to wrestle our 41-57 lbers. Not to mention Frost. The trajectory and potential of our lower weights is undeniable. And freakin awesome.

Happel pinned Redding at Daktronics this year so I guess we will see about that soon!

Go to the room and watch practice and then tell me how much more accomplished Redding is than Ech.

And I love Redding as a kid, but it’s a thoroughbred compared to a plow horse right now. And it’s not even that close.

Ech may lay an egg today but there no doubt he is the guy who is the best choice and has the best chance to AA for ISU wrestling
