Cincinnati line

I agree with this. I'll take Cincy by about 10. The way we have been playing is just average.

And those who are still expecting us to stay in the top 10 (or 15 even) all year, are going to be very disappointed. I predict 8-10 losses. Hope I'm wrong.

So 10-2 in the non-con and 12-6 in conference play, and you think they wont be in the Top 15 most the year? Thats what we did last year and there were only 3 weeks we were not in the Top 15.

i'm not sure why so many are in the predicting business with this team. i have no idea how we'll play from game to game.

There seem to be abnormal factors that come into play when you have a game at Christmas like this, too. Like when KU got slaughtered by Temple last year because KU's team was already on Christmas break. About the only thing that would surprise me would be if they were really sharp.

So please explain how I am wrong that they could not defend Washpun? 28 points and 11 assists.

I would say I was fine with about half of the shots he took because they were difficult. He had a bunch of long twos that I'll give up all day especially with McKay in his face. How many of those assists came on threes? I thought most of those were at least challenged. It's not like he was making unchallenged layups and throwing lobs. Sometimes you just get beat when you go 3/17 from 3.

I think Cincinnati will be favored by 5 or 6 at the most. I think they will win by 10 - 15.

ISU just does not have it together yet. I've seen UC play like 3 times, including the Xavier and VCU games. UC is a very good defensive team, and they are long and very athletic. They go 8 or 9 deep. Not great shooters, but not bad either. The team hits about the same from 3 as ISU does, but Cobb hits at nearly a 50 percent rate from outside....only shoots 5 or 6 a game so far though. I just don't know who from ISU will cover him.

Hopefully, I'm wrong and ISU puts everything together finally and starts a game hitting their shots and wanting to put a team away from the opening tip.

Precisely. There were 6 P5 teams that had 5 losses or fewer at the end of the regular season last year. And that was a year that college basketball had more "great" teams (Kentucky, Duke, Virginia, Wisconsin) than usual. By the way, we were 22-8 and ranked 13th. We need more college basketball fans among our diehard Cyclone basketball fans.

I would guess 50% of the regular posters on the bball board, don't regularly watch other college basketball games. And probably 90% of the posters melting down about a loss, don't watch other haves games.

Those that only watch Iowa St, which is fine, freak out about a loss, because they are still thinking football mindset, where a single loss can hurt your whole season.

Those that watch many other basketball games, understand that all teams have losses, and almost all teams lose to teams that they shouldn't.

I think many people would just like to see this team play a game like Virginia Tech where they dominated for 35 minutes. Kansas won the Maui Invite and Oklahoma got a great neutral court Win in dominating fashion against Villanova. It just would be nice to get a signature W on a road/neutral court. To this point our best wins are Colorado and Iowa. This team has been resilient in the past and although I think we will continue to struggle from behind the arch without Naz, I think Cincy is a more limited offensive squad which bodes well for us. I think we bounce back tomorrow barring foul trouble.

It's the Hoiberg effect. A bunch of football fans went from very little interest in bball to being all about it. It's a good thing but makes for some head scratching posts here.

UNI's shooting opened up the middle. ISU is not a great defensive team by any means but it's hard to defend the whole floor out to 25 feet.

Where ISU got punished was the pick and roll a the top of the key. That was automatic for UNI for a far-too-long stretch of the game. Everyone new if Washpun could get into the lane -- which he did at will -- ISU was in for a long night.
Agree. The complete mismatch that was Morris-Washpun impacted and dictated all aspects of our defense, and even rebounding.

In some ways this alleviates concern, on the other hand we did not have the skill or talent to stop essentially the same action over and over. I swear UNI ran the exact same thing 5 possessions in a row.

It sure was frustrating to see this and not have an answer.

My big beef with coaching was how long it took our staff to adjust and get Morris off Washpun. It was evident early on he could not handle that assignment.

Annoying how people keep blaming the loss on hot shooting. We could have and should have won that game. There were more & bigger reasons we lost that game then UNI being "hot".

Sometimes a loss is just a loss. Every team has them. Some are head-scratchers like UAB but UNI is a competent team with a competent coach who had already knocked off the #1 team in the nation on the road.

Let's play out at least the first few conference games before trying to fire anyone.

Remember when ISU went 14-0 and then lost 3 in a row and 4 out of 5? I seem to remember that team rebounding and finishing in the sweet 16. Long season, lotta games yet to be played people.

Not to mention crazy (by any other teams standards) come from behind wins vs. UNI, Akron, Boise St., and BYU previous to that stretch.

What exactly do they need to learn? WE LOST TO UNI BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T MISS! We could of triple teamed some of their shots and they would of gone in.

Thank you chuckd! People are being ridiculous on here. Our second half defense was solid and UNI was still hitting everything they threw up. And we still had a shot to win and the end.

Cincy has a good track record against us. This game is gonna be good. We gotta get back to playing ISU basketball and not the game our opponents make us play, if that makes any sense.

It does make sense. Problem is, I think we're both thinking about "Iowa St basketball" as what we've seen the last few years, but we haven't seen much of that yet this season.

Hopefully that's because it's still early and this team is trying to figure it out with their new coach, and not because the new coach is incompetent.
