Chris Cornell passes away after show

That made me chuckle a bit.

I think Eddie still smokes and drinks pretty heavy on the road. Needs to take care.

He's a pretty avid pot head and red wine aficionado, but I don't think he's anywhere close to early grave territory with either. I think McCready was the only one in PJ to get into the hard stuff, and he's been past that since the late 90's.

That said, I thought Cornell had things squared away.

Medical examiner determines Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging in Detroit.

So very sad.

Looks like it's being confirmed now that it was suicide.

“The Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy on 52-year-old Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden musician who died last night in Detroit. The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide. A full autopsy report has not yet been completed. There is no additional information at this time.”

And how the **** is Keith Richards outliving these people. He's looked dead ever since I can remember.

Richards kicked heroin in the early 80's. He just does weed, booze, and cigarettes these days. Granted he has to have cockroach DNA, but his really bad period was shorter than people think.

It's sounding more and more like Cornell was suicide. Mentally, Keith Richards is pretty damn healthy.

Oh I dont think so either, but I would like to enjoy rocking out with them long into Aerosmith type years. Wrap those dudes in bubble wrap.

Sounds like he's battled depression since his teen years.

Suicide sucks. Losing someone close to suicide really sucks. My thoughts are with his friends and family.

This sucks big time, I was never a huge Soundgarden fan, was more into Pearl Jam growing up, but Audioslave was some amazing stuff. I like some of his solo and acoustic work also.

I really loved a lot of the non radio tracks from bad motor finger. Out of enjoyment for heaviness, that was their best effort IMO.

I remember someone writing into Metal Maniacs (magazine) in the early 90's complaining that Sound Garden was just some band cleverly re-hashing Black Sabbath's music, and nobody could see them for what they were doing. That's how music works dude...

This news really sucks. Was kicking around with gf just a couple days ago if we should head to the show in Denver Monday night. Guess we'll just have to spin Temple of the Dog and pay respects instead.

Glad I caught Soundgarden on the King Animal tour a few years back.

Like many here, Soundgarden was the band I listened to the most in the mid 90s (followed closely by Alice in Chains). Didn't realize the demons that Chris faced, and the world is a little more dull now. On Tuesday I was on a road trip and was listening to all the Soundgarden albums by release date. There isn't much said on the evolution of the music the band released, but they made incredibly complex music very accessible. Their time signatures made the music unique. As someone who was attempting to play their songs, it was frustrating.

Soundgarden also used unorthodox time signatures; while such songs as "Jesus Christ Pose", "4th of July", and "Blow Up the Outside World" are in typical 4/4 time, "Outshined" is in 7/4, "My Wave" is in 5/4 and 4/4, "He Didn't" is in 5/4 and 6/4, "Black Hole Sun" is in 4/4 and 9/8, "The Day I Tried to Live" is in 15/8 for its verses and switches to 4/4 for the second half of its choruses. "Fell on Black Days" and "Somewhere" are in 6/4, "Never the Machine Forever" and "Black Rain" are in 9/8, "Beyond the Wheel", "Get on the Snake" and "New Damage" are in 9/4, "Face Pollution" uses 9/8 and 6/4, "Rusty Cage" is in 4/4, 7/4, 9/8, and 19/8, "Ugly Truth" is in 4/4 and 6/8, "Limo Wreck" alternates between 12/8, 15/8, 9/8, and 6/8, "Half" is in 5/8 with a measure of 11/16 before a 4/4 section, and "Spoonman" alternates between 7/4 verses and 4/4 choruses with a section in 6/4.

Their tunings were also all over the place.

Soundgarden often used alternative tunings in its songs. Many Soundgarden songs were performed in drop D tuning, including "Jesus Christ Pose", "Outshined", "Spoonman", "Black Hole Sun" and "Black Rain". The E strings of the instruments were at times tuned even lower, such as on "Rusty Cage", where the lower E is tuned all the way down to B.[129] Some songs use more unorthodox tunings: "Been Away Too Long", "My Wave" and "The Day I Tried to Live" are all in a E–E–B–B–B–B tuning and "Burden in My Hand", "Head Down" and "Pretty Noose" in a tuning of C-G-C-G-G-E".[130]

I'm sad I won't see them perform live again, and that the chance of new material being finished at a high level won't happen.
