Chizik: OLine isn't even close . . .

Telling like it is sometimes does not go over well in the PollyAnna world.

You Go Gene, bring in the guys we all know you need.

I would like Coach Chizik to bring in better players next year than the seniors who are graduating. The same for every year after that. That will get us to where we all want to go.

Is Our O-Line the Only Problem?

I might be in the minority, but I'm not a big fan of our offense. Sure there are exceptions, but IMO not many spread offenses run the ball effectively. It just takes too long for running plays to develop and with a mediocre o-line, that is the recipe for a weak running game. IMO there is something wrong with an offense where the QB leads in rushing attempts.

I'd like to see us run 50% from the I formation or single back offense with the QB under center and 50% from the shot gun.

I'll save another thread to rail on my disdain for the short passing game:)

Can someone in the know tell what happened to Kelechi Osemele? I thought he was supposed to be the second coming but I've very little about him and I don't even think he starts.

He is only a Freshman. The Fisher twins were the 2nd coming and look how that turned out.

You remind me of something Gene said last night. At one point, he said, paraphrasing him, "I'm not satisfied. But maybe I'll never be satisfied."

Hey, you're onto something here. Gene appears to have perfectionist tendencies.

This morning on C and C he said something to the affect of, when we start winning and we will start winning such and such will happen. The guys sure knows how to talk positive all the time, that is something not easy to do and a great thing to have in a coach.

I don't think he talks positive all the time. I think he's just brutally honest pretty much all the time, and he believes in what he's doing.

And I believe in what he's doing as well. I think most ISU fans are on board with it.

And part of that is that our O-Line really isn't all that good at the moment, especially in the running game.

Fortunately we have a QB who has a great arm, makes decent decisions and has guys who can (usually) make some catches and enough of a running game to keep the other team honest. You won't find me complaining about 32 points per game.

I like the look of that OL. Some real maulers there. I agree that Lamaak to center is probably the only way to get KO on the field assuming he's one of our five best. I wonder what happens to Hicks if Carpenter signs.
i carpenter signs i see hicks moving inside and forcing KO to try and take out reggie stephens at LG, which would be a difficult task... at least there is good depth developing

I am very disappointed in the play of the OL, in terms of the running game. I expected the running game to make a huge stride this year since almost everyone was back. Maybe I am just getting old, but I treally don't see why the full back never gets a carry. KU tackled Bass for a 3 yard loss on one play because KU sent the DE in on the edge. It just seems like the running plays that ISU has are very slow to develop. With everyone going to smaller, quicker DL, doesn't it make sense to blast it up the middle?

It does, but I just don't think we have anyone with legs strong enought to run through people. The last back we had who could do that was Ennis Hayword.

It's pretty clear that Chizik wants to establish running from the I-formation. We just can't do it very well right now so he has to adapt to what we can do. I'm pretty sure you'll see it as soon as we're able to do it.

Has ISU had a good back since Ennis? In the past, how many touches has the FB gotten for ISU , if you take out Koch. Kock was just an outstanding FB, if you wanted 2 he would get you 2, if you wanted 3 he would get you 2, until he was the only RB the team had left, then he lit it up somehow.

Since Ennis I would say no, but Wagner wasn't horrible, just not a guy that could carry the load. Hicks could have been better I think, but seemed really tentative.
