Cheikna Dembele

https://basketballrecruiting.n.rivals.com/news/starting-five-illini-land-4-star-legacy

It happens every year around this time. Previously unknown seniors surface out of the blue and generate a buzz. Often times, these late-bloomers are a bit over-recruited and weren't previously well-known for good reason. Could Cheickna Dembele be breaking that mold?
A native of Mali who Rivals.com watched at the 2014 Adidas Nations in Los Angeles, the 6-foot-9 Dembele has surfaced at the Scotland (Pa.) Performance Institute and he's developed quite a buzz over the last month.
Since word got out that he was available and looking to play college ball in the States, Dembele has gotten offers from N.C. State, Missouri, Iowa State, St. Joseph's, St. John's, Providence and La Salle to name a few, while Alabama, Arkansas, Maryland and Charlotte have been in touch or through to take a look.
Dembele is definitely a high-major level athlete and he has some scoring tools around the rim. His jump shot is workable and for a guy that is just bursting onto the scene he looks like he could be a legitimately viable option for those programs looking for help along the frontline.

I had read different articles about him earlier and I don't remember seeing any mention of St. John's being involved. And I was surprised. Well, now, here is the mention. Don't know why I should be surprised. And I'm not. Go Small and Prohm...reel him in!

Still on the radar...

Little suprised some of the staff is taking time out this week to see Dembele with the Sweet Sixteen game coming up. Hopefully it leaves a impression CD and shows him he's a priority.

@CoreyEvans_10 Temple, St Joe's, Syracuse, Iowa State, West Virginia all expected in tomorrow for 2016 SPI big man Cheickna Dembele

It's Wednesday tomorrow..it's not like it's game day or day before even...will prob be an asst visiting too. Visit for a. Hour then fly to Chicago..meh no big deal. Actually it's prob a great idea..what better time to see a recruit than now! Hey Mr. Dembele, don't forget to tune into our sweet 16 game Friday in Chicago". Use this success all u can.

Please Please Pleeeeaaaaase lock this kid down. Chris, go on vacation indefinitely please.

I wonder how serious we are with him. If there's a high level grad transfer I could see that being a bigger priority over him

so... this dude?
different type of player, but more proven

Austin Arians is 6-6, has scored more than 900 points in 3 years, will graduate at end of the semester. Expect high major interest.

I hope not. having 3 total posts, all of which are unproven makes me pretty concerned going into next year. A grad transfer with a 10/7ish stats and 6'8" or taller would be perfect imo. Of course I am guessing 60+ programs are saying the same thing so every possibility will be a dog fight.

Considering the amount of times ISU has been out to see him over the past 2 months I have to believe he is a primary big target at this date. The staff also has to be feeling pretty good about the potential to commit the time to his recruitment. It could all work out though, it was reported earlier on that he'd like to make an early decision, possibly taking visits in March and deciding soon after. The transfer market hopefully will just be ramping up at the point of his decision and the staff can plan accordingly.
I agree a grad transfer big would impact the roster more next year but the competition is stiff for those guys and if CD is willing to commit could be impactful for the next 4 he should be the priority as of today. IMO

Well, you have to recruit him like you're going to need him (while looking for high level grad transfers too).

Yep, I just don't think we are putting the full court press on him now. It does appear we are on him more so than Thik Bol though. If I had to guess I would say priority right now is:

1. Grad Transfer
2. Dembele
3. Bol

Don't see us needing this kid at all. It's not like Malou can't post up or rebound. He can. He's also a good shot blocker. Do not discount Ernst at all..if he can fully recover he's going to be a beast in future IMO.

true. while this kid will probably end up at a solid high-major, he plays the position we're probably most set at.

We must be pretty serious about him considering this is our 3rd trip to see him during the season.

It's possible that we would like at taking Dembelee and another grad transfer but it would take 2 players leaving to happen that way. Always possible though.

I still think our priority is a 6'9 post that can play right away. Need that defensively. I'd love to see Ernst develop, and I think he's got the body for it, but we need another one I think. Ernst, Carter and immediately available player X would make me feel pretty good about us in the post.

What's the scouting report on Simeon Carter for next season? Seems like he's the forgotten big man on this roster. Before the season started Prohm said Carter would see playing time. I understand all the freshman talk - bad defense, needs to add strength, but this kid isn't mentioned at all for next season.

Your list is going to look so silly when Thon Maker commits
