CCL Starts Tonight!

So if they don't play in the CCL they won't be playing basketball? This isn't football. they are going to play either way. If healthy, of course. Nobody is advocating having them play if they aren't up to it.
I have no problem with our guys playing in the CCL, but I understand the logic behind not having them play. There's really very little to gain for most of our guys. For the freshmen and transfers, I don't see a problem with them playing since they need to shake off the rust/improve parts of their game.

The trip in a couple months is going to be much more important than CCL.

Ok you're right. ISU returning a top 10 team. What could possibly go wrong?

They are just playing around. Do you not want them practicing either? They could run into just as much trouble if not more trouble in practice. You know all schools do stuff like this right? How often do we have serious injuries in the CCL?

Quit being a ***** *****.

We should cancel that overseas trip. Our guys shouldn't be doing anything physical. I'd much rather them be out of shape and not ready for the season.

No, the point of your overseas trip is that you can practice. It's more about the fact that the coaches and team get to play/practice TOGETHER.

Again, what is the upside of Burton dunking on a 6'3" white kid from North Polk?

Obviously they're not going to listen to me, but IMO......

ISU + top 10 returning team + lack of depth = Recipe for another chapter in our long history of nut kicks.

These guys play basketball a lot besides just the real games and practice. CCL is no different then when they go do that all the time. That's how they get better, putting in extra work.

SDW scored 63 points in one CCL game, then scored 33 points in a year and a half Cyclone career.

I'm sure that's it a great way to see ISU players in a fun type atmosphere, but I don't think it's a good way to predict future success as a Cyclone.

I realize that but add in a hundred or so fans wanting to see Burton light up the backboard and Georges score 60, along with some non-D1 guys (a couple of which probably feel like they have something to prove), I just can't help but think they would be better off holding out our 3 top guys, who have nothing to gain.

The players don't exactly look for contact during these games and most of them don't ever hit the floor. I have a hard time believing that they are at any more risk for injury during the CCL than they are during pick-up games with each other. By your logic, they should never practice. And no one is out to hurt anyone or prove anything crazy. Hell, most of the time the Iowa State guys are guarding their teammates.

Some thoughts on tonight.....I can believe that the summer workouts are tough with the new coach. The players have looked pretty tired over the past 2 nights.

-Monte is just plain fun to watch, even in this setting. He's so good. If, for some odd reason, he is around for his senior year he'll be a top player in the country.
-I think I'm more impressed with Nick N than I was with Custer this time last year. At the very least, Nick seems to be Big 12 size.
-Burton should probably not take 3's and he plays out of control a lot. But he'll make some pretty good passes and it'll be interesting to see how he plays in real games---right now if he decides to take it to the rim the players get the hell out of his way (and rightly so).
-Nick Weiler-Babb reminds me in a weird way of Monte. He kind of has the same frame and has that lankiness and smoothness that Monte has. He's a different player than his brother right now. He's got a little bit more finesse. I keep thinking that Hoiberg could have done great things with him. I suppose Prohm can too, but Hoiberg's best strength was turning average players into great players.
-Drake might not suck this year.

Exactly. The CCL is so low in quality right now just about any use of their time would be better including rest given how tired they are from the real workouts.

I think they could remain physical, but with some safety precautions implemented. I would suggest adopting standard OSHA 1915.159 personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) to all of their work above the rim.

If you're making these observations based on the Cap City games, you might want to reconsider how much stock you're putting into the CCL.

Quit being sardonic. The Cap City games give no benefit to the players that they won't already get on that overseas trip. Like I said in an earlier comment, I have no problem with the players who have been playing CCL games. I don't see the benefit of it, and there's a (highly unlikely) potential downside, so I understand where people are coming from when they say they're not really huge fans of our guys playing in the CCL.

Well they shouldn't be fans of them playing all the pick up games against each other and other people that they do all the time. Try telling them they are dumb for playing badketball.
