NBA: Carter to Magic

Silly trade for Magic. Courtney Lee will be good. Now they have no chance in re-signing Hedo. Carter won't fall into the team concept that was making Orlando successful. Great trade for Nets though.

I disagree, although I may be a bit biased, I think this is a good move for Orlando.

Courtney Lee is a solid player, but doesn't seem to have the ability yet to put the ball on the floor and create his own shot. And I doubt he will ever fully develop into a 15-20 point scorer.

Van Gundy said after the season was over that Orlando is missing a player that can create their own shot. Carter fits that role perfectly.

People have forgotten about Vince in the past two years, but he has been quietly very good.

VC averaged over 20 PPG last year and shot 39% from deep. He is an extremely underrated passer and is at a point in his career where he wants to focus on winning, not numbers.

Anderson is a 6'10 PF who has deep range (perfect for Orlando offense) and can rebound as well (led the Pac 10 in bords senior year).

Battie and Alston were likely going to be moved one way or the other. So, who wouldn't want a CLee for VC and Anderson deal?

This also gives some flexibility and leverage with Turk. If they don't want to pay Turk the $11 milliion plus, let him walk, sign a mid-level-exception PF like Rasheed Wallace or McDyess. This also let's you re-sign Gortat as well.

You end up with

PG-Nelson
SG-Carter
SF-Lewis
PF-MLE (Wallace, McDyess)
C- Howard

Pietrus, Gortat, Redick, A Johnson and another FA off the bench. That's an upgrade and gives the Magic flexibility to not kill the cap space with a huge Turk contract thru 2013, when he is 36 to go along with Rashard Lewis' huge contract. Therefore, the Magic can pay Howard the money he will covet when his deal is up.

Long story short, this is a good move for Orlando.

So you're basically telling the Orlando Magic beat reporter that he has no clue what he's talking about?

I'm probably willing to take his opinion on this trade over yours...

Also, don't you think he's a bit biased? Like he's going to say that it's a horrible move. :skeptical:

For what it's worth, after July 2nd I won't be with the Magic anymore. Just giving my opinion. I like the move, some don't. I believe Vince is an upgrade over Courtney Lee. This has no real impact on Hedo, he is likely going elsewhere regardless. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Should be a fun rest of the night for NBA fans.

I find this move interesting, but the comments in this thread more interesting. I never thought I'd see "Vince Carter" and "underrated" in the same sentence.

Regardless, the Magic are going to mortgage their future to try to win now.

The East will be more interesting. We will see if the Celts hang on to Ray Allen. Also, if so, we will see how KG looks coming off of a major knee injury. Shaq to the Cavs probably won't translate into more wins or losses, but it makes them look interesting. The Magic will have a bunch of guys past their prime minus Howard, so that will be interesting to see what happens to them as well.

I guess I see the team went to the NBA finals with it's current roster. re-sign Hedo or move Lewis to 3 and sign a quality PF. Lee was a rookie so this offseason he will develop with all his experience. Battie and Rafer's contracts expire after next season. So you have cap room then to go after the 2011 FA class.

I see your points. But I also dont buy into Vince all of the sudden being a team guy. I think he could turn to a locker room cancer.

A+ answer. Orlando got over big time.

Great point. If he doesn't buy into the team concept, there could be issues. That said, I think Vince has been wrongly labeled as a bad teammate and selfish because of a few incidents in Toronto. The couple people I've talked to say he's grown up since then and is still a great player. When the Nets came to town in February, Van Gundy said he is one of the most unselfish players in the league . His assists numbers have increased almost every year and his shooting % has remained in the mid-40s. I still think he has a few good years left.

Another couple of reasons why I'm inclined to believe that Carter will be a "different" player in Orlando:

1. As has been mentioned, Carter's beginning to age. This could be his last real good chance to participate on a winner.

2. This is a homecoming for Carter - he's originally from Daytona Beach, less than an hour away from Orlando.

3. He's been exiled to the Nets for the last several years. That alone might cause an attitude change.

By the way, just to be clear, I'm kind of at a "no opinion" on this trade. It could be a good thing, it could be a bad thing.
