Car trade-in question

This is my line of thinking in your situation. If your wife doesn't like the car she has, it's not a matter of if but a question of when. Might as well be soon and try to hold your money together on your current car. I would guess you'd do pretty well selling the car privately with that low of miles compared to what a dealer will try to do to you.

Yeah, it's either trade it off now or wait two years. We'll probably gain back $4000 or so more than what we owe at this point. We want a long term, 100,000 mile + car (this could last us to retirement at the rate we're driving it) but just don't care for this one.

Obviously the old car will NOT be worth more in 2 years.

But if you look at its two year depreciation VERSUS the depreciation on a new one! No way you're money ahead trading now.

But really your options are to try to reason with her or give in. And since I don't know you or her, logical thinking may be of no assistance.

If you get a new vehicle, make sure to make a list of the things you don't like about the current one and compare those items to anything you're looking at. You don't want to get stuck with another car she's not happy with down the road.

No reason to buy a new vehicle if you only put 5 k a year on it. Unless it's a 2 door and you're having triplets.
I put like 6-7k on mine a year and that's nothing.
Also, don't trade in. Sell it privately beforehand. You'll lose a few grand trading.

Since you are putting so few miles on the car and thus zero risk you'll run it into the ground anytime soon, I'd challenge you to save up and pay cash for your next vehicle. Besides not incurring any consumer debt, the disciplined approach will help you make a smarter financial buying decision when you do go to replace her car.

It is a lot harder to overspend on a car when you have to pull money out of savings to purchase it as opposed to if you're at the dealership deciding how little your monthly payment would go up if you spend another $8k or so.

Oh, the main reason for a trade in is that she doesn't like it. She wanted to go cheap and wishes she had spent a little more and got what she wanted (a Toyota RAV4 or similar).

Well I was going to say drive it till the wheels fall off, BUT since your keeping momma happy see what they offer you for a trade, but don't be afraid to sell it private. Good luck. I picked up a car with 28,000 on it last Feb, I'll have close to 30,000 miles on it just this year.

Trade it and keep wife happy. I have a Subaru Forester and love it. Toyota RAV4 is good and so is Honda CRV. Ford Escapes aren't bad either.

With higher trade in value you pay less sales tax. Of course they game you on the trade in price.
