Capital City League

Do you come up for the games? We try to hit 2 or 3 nights if we can. Some years are busier than others.

I've never been. Are the games free? What's the atmosphere like? The boys might enjoy a night of b-ball. It's hard to get them up to Ames for the big games.

Kind of hit or miss when we do. Still have kids playing baseball.

Same here. Usually we're like "oh, I'm bored. Are there cap city games tonight?" The advantage of having all of your kids grown & gone...your schedule once again becomes spontaneous, and is not dependent on what everyone else is doing. Took some getting used to after the crazy days, but now we really enjoy it.

Game play is pretty casual - not anywhere as intense as the NCAA games. It's in a highschool gym, so it's much more intimate than Hilton. The players often hang around & watch each others' games, and talk to the fans (pictures & autographs are common).

Like someone else said though...you never know for sure if all of the players will be there. Things come up. They may tell the coaches, but you don't know until the game starts if they're no shows. And a couple have been chronically late in previous years. If you're going just for the ISU players, you may miss your favorite on a given night. If you're going for the basketball...it's entertaining. :)

Brain fart on free or fee, but if we DID have to pay, it was peanuts.

Baseball is just a pain to schedule around, mostly because of rain outs and make-up games. Also when they play on multiple teams.

I don't remember it costing anything. Last game we went to though, the kids just walked in with a high school kid they know who was playing. It actually feels a lot like a bunch of guys messing around playing pickup or scrimmaging in practice. Don't expect anyone to play much defense. Kind of fun though cause of the lack of stress.

As always, I'm very excited to hear how the newcomers look.

I also like that Holden and Bowie are already in town. It gives them a little more time to mesh with their teammates and work on their game in Ames.

Hiphopp, have you tried getting them tickets for the Christmas break games? It's a good way to get down low, which the kids might enjoy. Drawback lots of people down low that don't do a great job of cheering.

I'm going with Holden and Long with the big Drake guy.

I'm gonna go with Vorland. Thomas is a stud and for some reason that I have no proof to back up, I feel like Carter would be one of those guys that can put up big numbers in CCL.

IIRC, Prohm didn't like it. Then there wasn't any CCL during Covid. I hope our men's team gets back into it again. It was pretty good for introducing people to ISU MBB.

Doubt that will ever happen - when ISU was in the Cap City League the rules concerning what coaches could do with the players was different. Now they can have pretty in depth workouts so no need for CCL to give them opportunities to play.
