Can anyone recommend a good cardiologist

If your family has a history of heart disease, you need to be getting a yearly physical. I know of family that lost everyone expect for the youngest son due to heart disease. We even witnessed one of them dying after an ISU-KSU game many years ago.

I guess while your getting a physical, not to early to get signed up for a lower end plumbing scope. Well.... you do have a few years on that I guess. I got my first one six years ago.

I hope you find a good doctor. In the meantime, get proper sleep, eat right, exercise 3-4 times a week, and don't read threads about conference alignment.

If you are talking about Beach and South 4th, then I believe so. We saw the truck stop and all of the sudden a couple cops on bikes came up, tried to get a carotid pulse, cut his seat belt off pulled him out of the truck and began doing CPR. The guy must have been 300-350 lbs. When the ambulance got there and loaded him up, he was just all purple. A lady that had stopped to see what was going on told us she was an ER nurse and she pretty much told us that he was gone when they loaded him up. Pretty sad as I lived on the same dorm floor with his brother years ago. If I remember right I think the family was from around the Carroll area.
 
Six years ago Iowa Heart at Mercy saved my bacon so I will get to see this years championship team. Got life flighted there, and their emergency response team (angioplasty) opened up my left descending and circumflex arteries. Dr Galli did the job and Dr Oronoff covered my recovery. He was great, said Manhattans are good for the Heart!! and my wife was there, guess what I got to drink during rehab!! About 10% of the pump doesn't work well now, but rest is OK. I get ejection fraction test every 2 years and EKG every year to check for any changes, Carry nitro! They be really good and state of the art, had me punched out within 10 minutes of helicopter landing! Highly recommend! Think you can make a heart checkup appointment but don't know about insurance etc.

Edit:They do have some PAs that probably you might see if you go in cold, and they are no frills, big into life style changes etc. My humor falls flat with them, so I think best you ought to see a GP first and get a referral if necessary so you can see a cardiologist. I don't see the PAs anymore, they certainly know their stuff, but i like to discuss options, they didn't support Manhattans for rehab for example, but I already had the boss's opinion. Doesn't CW talk about a Men's clinic on Podcasts. think its the Iowa men's clinic. I do have some metal (stent) in my left descending artery.

As others have said, get a regular doctor. Tell him your family history and get a full physical. If any numbers are off you can go from there. You are at that age now, especially with a family history you should be getting at least a yearly physical. They can tell a lot of things now from bloodwork. So start there.

While it does depend on insurance, a cardiologist is one of the specialists that likely isn't going to want to see you until your GP has assessed your cholesterol, blood pressure, and overall health. Going to a cardiologist first will likely be a waste of time and money.

But now that my father-in-law just went in for emergency bypass surgery, I'm reminded my side of the family has a long history of heart troubles as well. I should probably get a professional to look under my hood soon, but since I don't even have a regular doctor (yet), I don't even know where to start. Would welcome any experienced input.

Do yourself and your family a favor and go to the Mayo Clinic. We live in KC, my wife has had a leaking tricuspid valve and, after two consultations in metro KC (which is a good medical environment), my wife's cardiologist (who is an ISU EE grad/Creighton Med grad) advised us to go to Mayo. THAT PLACE is absolutely, off the charts, AWESOME! And, the advise they gave her and the changes they've made in her meds have made a world of difference in her health and life!! AND, the 2 days of consultation there cost us $2K and the less than 30 minute consultation with a heart surgeon at KU Med cost $5K!!

All of that might be true but there is literally no prohibition in an open network to going to a cardiologist or any other specialist.

We have a program here called Planet Heart. You go into the hospital and go through a bunch of tests then if they see anything irregular, you move on. My dad just did it because he thought he should and he had one irregular reading so they went in to possibly do an angioplasty but, like they kind of thought, it was just a poor reading and they just pulled out and he was done. It's a way to get more in depth than just a physical without seeing a specialist right away and you skip dealing with a regular doctor for the most part.
