Campustown Redevelopment

Thanks. That’s actually a really good location for a sports bar. A few parking spots in their own lot and then public lots right across the street.

Some nice improvements happening on the south end of Welch. Stomping Grounds put in a new patio.

Nice, Campustown needs a sports bar. I wonder what they are going to put where the district used to be.

That place must be haunted or something. Nothing ever lasts more than a couple years there. Pretty sure there was bar that opened and closed within 90 days when i was in college.

I wish there was a master list of what places used to be called, so everyone had a frame of reference. Here's what a brief search turned up for that location.

2518 Lincoln Way (dates are not inclusive)
*The District - 2015-18?
*Charlie Yokes - 2014
*A.J.'s Ultra Lounge - 2012-13
*Club Blow - 2011
*Capone's - 2008-10
*Spiritz - 2007
*Santa Fe Coffee - 2006
*MoJazz - ?-2005

Club Blow was what i was thinking of that opened and closed in like 90 days. With a name like Club Blow I’m shocked it didn’t work.

I think a sports bar in the area would be nice. However, I am not sure if his plan is going to work. He wants it to be something where you can come and watch a game and bring alumni and families to. However, the article says that he wants to open before the kitchen is finished. Even then, he said there were going to be 10 items on his menu.

I think Campustown needs a sports bar; but said sports bar needs to be more focused on food than being a bar. I don't think this place is going to satisfy it.

Campustown has 2 damn good sports bars (WAS and Es Tas), but I think a place that was more family friendly would be a great addition. Get lots of ISU gear in there and what not.
Agreed. Something like the Airliner in IA City.
I love Shorts too.

Stillwater has a great one called the Garage. Eskimo Joe's before the game was a blast.

Actually this might be towards his favor since I'm going to guess the majority of the time that there will be families will be during football season so having a short menu and nailing it will better serve him. The rest of the time it'll have to stay afloat from college students drinking and again having a short menu better serves him in that sense as well.

Could he make it so you can bring in outside food? You could run out the the parking lot at night and grab a super dog or across the street for Pizza Pit/Jimmy Johns/Fighting Burrito.

There’s a place in Waukee (global brew) that lets you bring in outside food and it’s pretty popular

I hope it works out. I hope that the owners have done their research, and set their business model accordingly. Putting a restaurant in campustown cuts off a sizable demographic, because there are plenty of people who just won't go there. If their model is too dependent on drawing in families or even business lunches, it can be tough in that area.

Agree. The only restaurant, imo, that seems to have found the perfect blend of students and Ames residents would be Stomping Grounds.

I think Ben has got the campustown thing down. Seems like that man has properties all over.

I do agree with some that this will not work how he is marketing it at this time. He may think he can get some more families and alumni in there, but in the end it will turn into more of an Es Tas than a Wallaby's or whatever. It will get overrun by the students around there. But that won't mean that it isn't successful, just not what he is trying for. Which he may be fine with.

I can't remember what was at that location before the bars.
