Campbell Still in Demand?

If recruiting is the issue, then how do you explain the massive disparity between the offense and defense this year?

Comparing Dekkers sophomore year to Purdy's isn't fair to Dekkers. Hopefully J.Brock, Norton, & Silas are future NFL RBs, Dean is a future NFL TE, and X & Noel are future NFL WRs. But Dekkers & Purdy have different situations and the story on Dekkers isn't fully written yet.

Look at TCU last year vs this year. Last year, they finished 5-7 and that included winning 3 out of 4 one score games. Max Duggen is their QB again this year but they have a new offensive philosophy (came with a new HC; hopefully ISU can keep Campbell here for next year) and are undefeated. Growth and different results can come. It depends on A LOT of different factors in A LOT of different places.

None of the guys you listed in the second paragraph are future NFL players other than X.

I wouldn't call this Campbell's best recruiting class. The numbers are massively skewed because JJ Kohl is so insanely high up there in the rankings. If Kohl were a three star, this would be a below average class for ISU. Outside of Kohl there isn't a single guy in the top 600. Last year there were 8 guys in the top 600, 2021 had 2, 2020 had 2.

You have an upper-tier P5 head coach. A damn fine coach with tons of aptitude going forward. Running him off would be a huge perhaps irreplaceable error. A little patience this year is in order.

I HAVE ALREADY STATED ON THIS FORUM ...THAT I DO NOT WANT CAMPBELL FIRED...BUT THE OFFENSIVE LINE COACH SHOULD GET HIS WALKING PAPERS AT THE END OF THIS SEASON!

By saying that, then you are agreeing with my point that comparing Purdy's sophomore year and Dekkers's sophomore year is unfair to Dekkers.

My thoughts on the guys in the second paragraph are the same as for Dekkers. Their story isn't fully written and I am hopeful that during the rest of their time with ISU, they prove that they are future NFL players.

Call me a sunshine pumper if you want but there's no benefit for a fan like me or the players for getting down on Dekkers. Just like there wasn't the times I did it for Doxson, Bandauer, Rosenfels, Wallace, Flynn, Love, Terry, Meyer, Arnaud, Bates, Tiller, Jantz, Barnett, Richardson, Rohach, Lanning, Park, Kempt, Noland, and Purdy. I've seen the fruitlessness of my past way.

I'm hoping ISU bounces back from this season and shows the same because the close losses are different than years where most losses were laughers.

None of the six schools I mentioned are really dangerous national title contenders (none of us think we can be) or competing for the conference title year after year (I think this is the dream for our fans). KSU and Iowa are probably the closest and Iowa has been really exposed the times they got into the national spotlight type of game or even in position to win Big Ten.

3 of the schools you mention have one thing that ISU doesn't. Proximity. Iowa is closer to Chicago, Kansas and Kansas State closer to Kansas City. Even UN-L is a tad closer to K.C. and is a bigger city with more to offer than Ames, IA itself. The Kansas schools also are a bigger draw to Texas kids, being closer than the state of Iowa with milder winters, and they have a 'minor league' system of JUCO's with really good track records of producing D1 athletes in their state.

Fact of the matter is Iowa State is kind of in a no man's land of no man's land. Iowa has historically gotten cream of the crop in regards to Iowa kids. Iowa State gets the leftovers. The state simply might not be big enough for two Power 5 conference football programs, at least not big enough for both to enjoy success simultaneously. What we need, more than anything, is to hope Campbell doesn't take us off a cliff before KF takes Iowa off one.

Your Power Cat Podcast boys think Campbell is near the end. So I am curious as to why you think he's upper-tier. I know Power Cat doesn't speak for your whole fanbase, but wonder if what your saying is more wishful thinking, that ISU hangs on to a lemon head coach to keep them down.

I for one, don't agree either. Campbell was trending to be an all-timer type of coach here, and still could be, but given what we've seen this year and last, I don't thing it would be impossible for someone else to come in and get 6-6, 7-5. 8-4 type of seasons out of ISU football. It's basically the ceiling of the program looking back at the last 30 years across 4 coaching regimes.
 
Campbell isn’t being fired anytime soon. Look at how many losing seasons Prohm got after being handed the keys to a great team and under performing with it.

It’s going to take time to build Iowa State into a power house. Down years will happen. CMC will make some staffing adjustments after his worst season here. He wasn’t going to fire his OC after having the best offense in school history and a year removed from winning a NY6 bowl.

Not making a bowl game and the offense being complete garbage is a different story.

If CMC will not fire Manning, there is no rational expectation that the offense will improve, or that ISU will move away from CampbellBall, which is to now simply keep it close, but still lose.

We were top half in offense the last three years in the conference, but sure, go off.

Not saying you're wrong but I am not confident CMC will make any note worthy staff adjustments.
 
Manning should be on staff, he in my opinion is a brilliant guy who belongs in a dimly lit room. The problem is he is not head OC material because he belongs in a corner desk in a dimly lit room. Campbell already alluded to this in the post game presser, we need someone who can take the plans and get the players to execute, that takes a no nonsense coach like Heacock, or a past example like Mangino. Mangino did not work out as he admitted Paul Rhoads practice style was a hot mess, and it did not jive with his practice style, which was you will run this same play over and over and over till the end of practice until you get it right, Rhoads did the timed drills thing.
