Campbell Still in Demand?

Easier than ISU, yes. Any staff is going to have some issues getting top kids they want due to academic standards, but they're in the Big 10 and have a lot of money being thrown at the football program. I always thought Campbell would excel at a place where academics play a major part.
If a kid could be accepted at Northwestern, would he choose ISU?

Worse than Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, and Illinois? Umm......no.
I would take any of those jobs ahead of Northwestern.

I think many of y'all are underestimating how few B1G caliber athletes qualify for a university as rigorous as Northwestern.

As others have mentioned, the transfer portal is only going to make it even harder for schools like Northwestern and Stanford. There's a reason both programs hit rock bottom even with great coaches.

Sure, the facilities are pretty. But you need talent to win games, and you'd have access to a far greater quantity of good athletes at any other B1G university.

I get that from my own experience. But I'd have to guess it could be a culture shock that is good. Expands a person's world a bit.

Of course that's all a very personal decision. Especially when the kids are involved. We're wrestling with it now and there's no easy answer
There are opportunities for kids there that aren't available in Iowa. But the Iowa small-town atmosphere has a lot of intangibles.

I think that they had to make a statement by firing the HC. But when they make a new hire after this season, I really doubt that many of the current coaches are retained. If I were them, I'd look at a Lou Ayeni, maybe David Shaw. Maybe see if you could pull a Jedd Fisch from Arizona. With B10 money, they should be able to outbid pretty much anyone outside of their conference and the SEC. The WR coach from tOSU would be an interesting hire too.
Zero chance they get heartline from OSU, he is Days replacement after they lose to Michigan this year.

Pretty much what they'll have to do, but I was thinking last night that really the entire staff should be let go as well.

If this was serious enough that the head coach is fired, the assistants were much more likely to have known this was going on. I'm sure those guys are much closer to the happenings of the locker room.
Agree with this. NW will have a huge black mark on their entire FB program for the rest of this year. You would think. Of course, I don't know for sure, but the culture there, ingrained to the players, seems very off, almost sadistic (?) from some of what I've just read.

I don't know how you can be excited by a team, that has not done well over the past couple of years, and now has these allegations in full light. I don't see that changing until they purge the entire staff and start over.

They had a strong effort to unionize a few years back. In light of all this new information, I wonder if any of that is connected?

The players? Interesting. I vaguely remember some of that, but not much. Did that ever amount to much, either at NW, or elsewhere? Apparently not.

Well, we do have NIL now, but apples to oranges.

The players signed union cards and had a case with the National Labor Relations Board back in 2015. Their effort was struck down, with NLRB saying athletes aren’t employees. Seems like the NW player concerns focused on access to healthcare and compensation. The NCAA “won”, but it makes you wonder if a different ruling might’ve helped the steps toward NIL.

Interestingly, the NLRB released updated guidance in 2021 that athletes could be considered employers: https://chicago.suntimes.com/2021/9...er-memo-ollege-football-players-are-employees

NIL is still evolving, but jobs like NW might be tougher today than historically. Unless a kid loves the school and has strong academic interest, their elite players are going to get poached.

IMO the same holds for ISU if we aren't making Bowl games and having a lot of on field success. With the time commitment playing P5 football entails, it's gotta be a grind winning just a few games a season.

Yeah I would go with Illinois for sure, Maryland also has potential, Indiana is a toss up.
I gotta believe NW is the toughest job in Big10 because of its academic requirements and different attitude toward sport than other Big10 schools.

With the Big10 & SEC TV deals being so far ahead of ACC, Big12 and Pac12; I feel like second tier Big10 and SEC will be able to hire the best coaches from the other 3 conferences.

One of the only advantages of the NW job is that the expectations are simply not there. If this scandal didn’t happen fitz is probably still safe even after the disaster of last season. They aren’t quick to fire and they know their limits. While other big ten schools should probably be in a similar mindset, due to the money and resources you mentioned there is far less job security.

The counter to this: why would a coach that can get to the playoffs in the Big 12 leave for a tougher/impossible path in another conference? I know, money and ego. But the choice is a lot less clear cut than it used to be when there’s a clear path to the playoffs.

I don’t believe they’ll lose to Michigan and I definitely don’t believe they’ll fire Day if they do. Not if that’s their only loss.

Gosh, hope ISU don't have some type of scandal.

Jesus Christ do we have to do this with every damn job opening? 0 percent chance he’s leaving ISU for ******* Northwestern. That is a step back and it’s not like ISU is a great head coaching job. Northwestern, at least it used to be, is/was the worst football program in D-1 history.
