Camp battles

I assume we'll hear more by this evening when the twos and 4s practice. I thought I heard near bowl season that he was doing pretty well with his recovery

Is that what they are doing? 1's and 3's in the morning. 2's and 4's in the afternoon.

I'm a bit surprised that they would have such a definitive distribution of players before Fall camp even begins. Plus, the Pre-Fall Camp Depth Chart has lots of "or's" on it.

You don't typically hear much about a 3rd stringer. We have a clear-cut 1 & 2 right now. Devon's only a RS freshman; after Kyle's gone I'm sure we'll be hearing his name a lot in the "backup battle" next fall.

Hell, considering ISU's revolving door of quarterbacks history, don't be surprised if Devon ends up starting a game or two by the end of the season.
I still want Zeb as the starter

He's got to earn it. Kempt isn't perfect but he's a great game manager. I have no problem with Kempt being the starter going into week 1
Look go watch a couple games last year and there were quite a few near picks by Kempt that were drops by the D. Not that Zeb was perfect either but I give Zebs ability to actually run the ball the edge all other things held equal.

If anything Noland and Kempt are pretty similar in terms of ability rushing when needed. I call it a push.

Really glad that DM is around....leadership will be different but certainly not in question.

I'd hope if he's the starter it's due to circumstances outside of just not playing well.

CMC seems pretty good at staying the course course and adjusting within the system vs. interjecting a new starter to surprise the other team.

Good-Jones was a little off target with his snaps early last year (first 4 games I think), and he has experience playing tackle so it makes sense if Foster isn't going to start that Good-Jones starts at LT. It's a little disappointing thinking Foster would be good enough to secure that spot, but the coaches know that they are doing. I like seeing Mueller running with the 1s though. I think he is gonna be pretty solid.

I'm interested to see how we use the true freshmen now that they can play 4 games and still redshirt. I could see Downing get some reps on the o-line and special teams and get a decent amount of PT in 4 games. Same with Mitchell playing a little QB and maybe lining up in the slot and as a running back. I could see Scates or Shaw playing the entire season, but I think most of the freshmen will play in 4 or less games.

Maybe we should have a separate thread to discuss the freshmen and PT?

Ok, my take on the redshirted freshmen playing. Most likely it will be games at home or close. Typically teams don’t take the whole squad on away games unless it’s to Iowa city or someplace close.

If you are looking at just getting a kid few reps, you will do it with the whole squad around. You won’t take a chance that the starter gets hurt and all you have left is a guy you hoped to “see how will do”

I think that we won't see much of them early. They will play them if a guy is injured and out for a few games. But other than that, I expect we'll see a lot of them playing the last 3 games and the bowl game.

Based on the first day of camp? Seems a bit premature to conclude that JGJ will be at left tackle. More significant is that Campbell talked weeks ago about Newell being at Center. But for now, I would imagine that they will try all sorts of configurations for the first few days.

Campbell in his presser essentially said that the o-line will be very fluid for the next 6 days. So much for all the journalists who jumped all over the o-line configuration for the first day of camp.

Do you mean “the last three home games”?

Because someone made a good point about the restrictions of a travel squad. Not much room for true freshmen who aren’t already on the two deep.

And otherwise, I couldn’t see him not giving a bunch of freshmen mopup time in a blowout win over Iowa.

*For that matter, I’d LOVE to see him give a bunch of freshmen PT late in a comfortable win at home over OU. Should that actually happen somehow, how could he resist?

Didn't Kempt just come off a season in which he broke the school record for completion percentage and led us to wins over 2 Top 5 teams? Sorry but Kempt will be our starter as long as he can stay healthy. Never seen a better QB at ISU in my 35 years following the team.
While I agree with others that Seneca and Sage are the best we’ve had in the last 25 seasons or so, Kempt seems to be discounted just because of the arm strength.

I did the math in another thread, but basically if you extrapolate his average passing yards per game from last year over a full season* he ends up in 2nd place for single season passing yards all time just behind Wallace who set the record in a 14 game season.

*includes games Park started, Kempt missed for injury and the Kansas game where we basically just rammed the ball down their throats.

I don’t think he’s an all time ISU qb, but he’s a hell of a lot better than he gets credit for.

Isn't it nice that we can go into camp without a QB controversy? Remember the years when it was all up for grabs going into camp?
