Caleb Grill has been dismissed from team

A couple thoughts after reading some of the posts. I think Grill is limited with his offense and really can't create his own shot. He's a great shooter when he's able to get his feet set but I think teams have seen that and so they know if they stay on him and are physical with him they can throw him out of his rhythm.
I think he's getting frustrated with not being able to get a descent shot and probably somewhat because of his injury.
TJ not working the refs is a misperception IMO. His style isn't to act like an idiot but rather to talk to the ref like a person. I've listened to him talk about it on the coach's corner show and he feels like if you act like an idiot that the refs will actually go the other way on you and not give you the call. I'm sure some would disagree with that.
With that said, we've had some really disappointing losses this year and knowing we could have 3 or 4 more wins is frustrating. But, I am happy we have TJ and hope that starting with next years recruits added to the guys we already have we'll start becoming more athletic and consistent.

If you only read this board and didn't watch the games you'd think TJ was sitting at the end of the bench doing crossword puzzles and knitting. I wonder when the "TJ doesn't talk to the refs" thing started?
I am not sure when it started, but likely as soon as he became the coach at ISU. I remember watching some of his games during the covid year at UNLV, and he was a lot more in your face with refs when he was there IMO.

Grill losing his cool cost us the game.
No, no it didn’t. It didn’t help, but him losing his cool didn’t cost us the game. We had missed lay ups, missed 3’s and poor shot attempts that all attributed to us losing the game.

We were up 6 at the point and stretched the lead to 7 two mins later. Then we proceeded to miss some FTs and were one and done of the offensive end after launching 3’s.

We were up 4 with 3:38 left and we fouled them on 3 consecutive possessions resulting in 5 points for them while we continued to miss jumpers and layups.

Us allowing them to score 19 points on FTs is what cost us the game.

I muted the TV and turned on John and Eric after Settles said Gabe pushed and tripped Stevenson when he clearly just slipped and fell.
WVU fans on twitter kept saying the announcers were clear ISU homers. I laughed so hard and responded to one dude saying, umm Settles played for Iowa, try harder.

I usually don't mind Settles because he actually does his homework, but last night he was bad. Not just in an anti-ISU way. He just wasn't good.
Agree, and surprisingly, he only had one hok reference the entire night.

Caleb would benefit greatly from a PG and or SF who could shoot from the outside and was a serious threat to drive the lane. Or even a post who demanded a double team that would see open shooters and actually pass to them. All he can do offensively is shoot.

How are we at the point with guys at this level that can’t handle the ball well enough to dribble up the floor against pressure or drive?

I remember reading here about the time Matt Thomas spent over a summer working on defensive footwork and speed. He didn’t become a star defender but certainly improved significantly.

Yet we have super seniors that aren’t confident about the dribble. Are they just old horses who can’t learn new tricks?

In losing Grill we have both lost his shooting threat and defensive contributions.

Additionally, without him, our guard depth is non-existent. The other rotational guys consist of 3 guards (Lipsey, Kalscheur, Holmes), 3 forwards (Kunc, T King, D Watson), and 2 centers (Osun, Jones). That rotation is extremely thin on ball handling and play making. In the games Grill sat, we literally don't have another guard in the rotation to bring off the bench and when he's played, he's been a shell of himself. I'd say last night he looked closer to the KState home game than he did healthy. It really feels like we're 1 guard short right now and it's completely killing us.

I don't think anyone hates the guy. People are just analyzing him as a player. And lately it's not been very good, regardless of his injury. We've watched this guy play for 3 years and he's just a very average one-dimensional 3 point shooter.

He was shooting over 40% on high volume before the injury. He's also a good defender (when healthy) and rebounds well for a guard.

OP is a bonehead.

I never thought we'd turn into Hawks.

Hating our own players.

Come on Sig you know that has been going on even before we could correspond on the internet.

Having it put in print on a screen I guess makes it so much worse. And "bonehead" is really mild by comparison to some of the things said years past.

I'm more tolerant of such said stuff between friends over drinks to blow off steam in the heat of the moment than somebody taking the time to sit down, navigate to this site, setup a new thread with "Bonehead" in the name, and then type out of a message about why indeed they think Caleb Grill is a bonehead.

There's a very different level of intent and premeditation there.
