Bronny James Collapses during Practice

Some people blame an unrelated 2021 phenomenon for Fred Hoiberg’s mid 2000s diagnosis.
I don't think anyone is doing that. Some people can have a bad heart from the start and need medical care. The random young people that are in outstanding shape having random heart attacks and issues with no prior issues is what we should be worrying about.

I'm gonna be honest, between this and Dedric I'm wondering what business my fat *** has playing pickup ball over my noon hour. Scary, scary stuff, and so crazy to think about with a kid like Bronny who's in incredible shape.

This has to be a genetic thing. I got my heart check last year to make sure doing cardio was still ok. Lots of kids don’t get checked since they are super athletes and assume they are fine. Hope James makes a full recovery and can keep playing

Oh people are definitely doing that. They are insane people and consider yourself blessed to not know them, but that’s what they are doing.

We all know what is being implied here... You can be in "outstanding shape" and have an undiagnosed heart issue. See Hank Gathers and Reggie Lewis.

Every single college athlete should be getting their heart checked out before competition; hell the checks back in 2020 might have saved Max Duggan later in life.

Might end up being a good thing if they can identify the issue and monitor it from here on.

So scary. Even if they determine the cause and are able to treat, I'd be scared to ever play again!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say there aren't more instances of this and there are two things going on:

1. We've had a handfull of high profile cases that have brought more attention to it lately.

2. Confirmation bias from the tin foil hat crowd.

If anyone has any scientifically validated data showing there has been an increase in the number of these cases I would be interested to see it.

No data on hand, but cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among younger athletes

I mean that's not shocking. But is it rising or do we just hear about it more?
I don’t think it’s rising to any real degree or I feel like I would have heard of it but I don’t have numbers readily available. To your point if this was Bronny James whose dad was an accountant it wouldn’t be news.

Virtually all of these in youth sports are due to genetics or trauma. Remember cardiac arrest is different then a heart attack and unless there is a complaint people that young rarely get a full cardio work up.
