If you aren't going to send the crew to the location, why not just use Scott and Blum again? I like the TV team a lot obviously but you can't tell me they don't do better than a team not on location.

Having an energy guy like Fran that actually immerses himself in his game/atmosphere being remote is a travesty. It’s Iowa’s fault, if they had stayed ranked they probably would have been there. It’s also December 9th so that probably plays a role as well.
I can't stand when ESPN does that. If you don't want to send people, put the game on ESPN+.
If the game is going to be on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU they need to actually send them to the game. It's so dumb.

I'm too naive to know exactly what it would take to do this but if you don't have the crew in house, can't you dedicate someone on the tech side to make a bigger effort to keep relevant stats displayed? I think id rather have a running banner with points, fouls, etc.. with no audio than two guys at home shooting the breeze.
Honestly if they are going to do that, they need to go Peyton and Eli on the broadcast and literally make it two guys just hanging and watching the broadcast.
I've never understood it because flying the talent in is one of the least expensive parts of the broadcast. You're still trucking equipment in from somewhere and paying 12-15 people anyway between camera guys, techs and a producer/director.
I don't think they are bringing in much equipment and staff anymore. I think ISU provides most of the technical support itself.
Well and in all actuality, how much is the cost savings in doing this? Seems like some real nickel and dime from the worldwide leader.
I would recommend Varsity app for audio. You get John and Heft for everything. Not sure how bad the delay is, but I've enjoyed it very much.
Even with the remote broadcast there were still a couple of time the commentators were drowned out by the crowd. Amazing job Hilton.
With the streaming services available, how do we not have multiple audio options for these games? I want an ESPN+ stream that has the game with Walters and Heft synced up with the broadcast. It can't cost ESPN much to pick up the radio broadcast rights with the next TV contract, could it? They could also sell an ESPN Radio+ subscription for audio only streaming rights rather than the Varsity app.

Having the production staff off-site, in a studio somewhere in Orlando, Charlotte, or Bristol, means the same people can do multiple games in one day, depending on the schedule. It also reduces overall staff need, plus not paying for travel/lodging for 25+ people per game. Same theory for the announcers -- if they're at home, they can do a game every night with no expenses.
The people who are on-site for these productions are almost entirely local, so there's no money spent for flights or hotels.
I believe it was during the NIT Classic that Fran was talking to his partner about being in Ames for the Cy-Hawk game. I remember he talked about taking his partner to Wallabies, etc. They must have decided to pull the plug on being on-site after that.
It'd be nice if they had regional crews who worked the midwest. The production level of ESPN is atrocious compared to FoxSports, NBC, CBS. It's pretty clear to me ESPN has reached the point where they don't really care because they know they're the only place you can consume this entertainment. Don't like watching Iowa/ISU on ESPN, go watch it someplace else. Oh, you cant? Tough luck, bud.
