I’m certain articles like this were written about Breece last year but it still generates a question for me. I’m the type of guy that digs in deep on ISU and I’m familiar but not super clued into the rest of the Big12 but I am fairly uninformed when it comes to the rest of college football. Why is it the conversation last year was can Breece sneak into the very end of the first round vs this year I’m seeing a decent amount of mock drafts with Bijan as high as the top ten.

I’m sure team needs and draft positions is a large factor but is Bijan really viewed as that much better of an NFL prospect? The two guys almost had identical final seasons as far as production but Breece essentially did it twice. Then Breece did slightly better in the combine.

I hate to say it but is it as simple as he’s got the longhorn logo next to his name.

The though is that Bijan would also play a lot of receiver which would add to his value.

He’s a stud. We bottled him up pretty well his 1st two years, but he gashed us his last season.

The number one reason Bijan is rated and Breece was not is that Robinson went to top tier football university.

His final two years Bijan averaged 5.8 and 6.1 yards per carry. He brought in 45 catches over 22 games in those two seasons.

Meanwhile, behind a significantly worse offensive line, Breece had 5.6 and 5.8 yards per carry. He had 59 catches in 24 games.

Both are really good backs. I think Breece was severely underestimated, but good for Bijan if he is not.

I can see the argument for grabbing a RB at the end of the first round so you own those 5th year rights. Seems like teams almost always let their drafted RBs walk after that rookie contract so to keep that potential stud one more year on the “cheap” before that decision would be nice.

I wouldn't think so. Adrian Peterson is the one who comes to mind, but I wouldn't take him over the top-flight QB prospects if I'm the Panthers or the Texans who need a future at the position.

The 1st overall pick will get a roughly 4 year $40M contract. For a running back that would be the 7th largest current contract. Additionally, a running back isn't going to be the driver of a Super Bowl victory any time soon.

Meanwhile, if you take Stroud or Young who have a chance to be a great QB (I'm not going to project their chances), the 4 year $40M contract is only the 16th largest current contract.

Even if it's LT or AP or Priest Holmes, all of those guys dominated behind great offensive lines. They might struggle (assuming you get the prime version) on a team that has the top pick in the draft.

Bijan is not as good as Breece, but he has been heralded since before he arrived at UT. His agent is doing a great job of stirring up buzz and getting his name in the news. None of this publicity hurts.

I saw a TikTok (of all places) discussing leading running backs on the Super Bowl winning team and their salary. Spending money and top picks on RB is a massive waste, like you said.

It will get to the point where draft grades on RBs will show "generational talent at his position" followed by "will be a solid day 2 pick".

Running backs are generally replaceable, that's the matter of the business.

There has not been an RB taken in the top 15 since 2018. To your point, it could be a long time until we see that again.

I wonder if it is self-reinforcing in some ways.

Guys know the RB position is devalued... talent flows to QB and WR or to defensive positions where you can get paid... the RBs coming up just aren't as talented because the guys who would have been stud RBs in previous generations grow up playing QB or WR now... and the whole process repeats.
