So I think I'm going to get a new dog and am really thinking about getting a boxer. Does anyone have one and if so any advice about having one? Training? there nature? Etc

Boxers are great dogs. They tend to act like puppies for about 3 and a half years, if not more. My four year old is still as hyper as he was when we got him. Ours is great with our 3 year old girl. He is gentle as can be when playing with her.

On to training, mine rode the short bus to puppy school. He got a diploma but was "encourage" to re-attend the next class. We never took him to the next class and he has been fine. When it comes to jumping up on people, that was our biggest problem. They can be big dogs, so the jumping can get annoying. We made sure we were next to him when we thought he would jump and put him in the stay position. It actually worked.

Inside and the shedding isnt that bad, but probably because the hair is so fine. And i have never had any probs with a boxer or my box/rot mix they have been the sweetest dogs I have ever had. They act super tough when a stranger comes around, but wouldnt hurt a fly. Once my dog knows you the first thing she does it get her toy and demands play time :wink:

Ours is the exact same way. Whenever someone comes to the door he freaks out. He sounds like he is literally going to rip someones head off. Once they enter and he knows them, he's their best friend. Ours does have a licking issue. Its non-stop. Since day one, thats all he does.
 
I have a boxer that looks a lot like ianuni57's. All the descriptions are very accurate. ours can be a little too protective at times. Especially when on a leash. One word of caution though, Boxer's have a lot of energy. If you don't have the energy to keep up or the yard to let them play, they will constantly have energy.

I would definitely suggest getting one.
 
I agree with all the above posts.
My girl is 1.5years and 110% puppy...she is very hyper but if you get the right amount of exercise for them its nothing to worry about.

She is also very protective but turns in to your best friend once she meets the person.
And yes, i too have the licking issue. Seems like thats all she does hahaha.....

Overall, great dogs and i would recommend them to anyone that loves playful and entertaining dogs

I've grown up with boxers since I was about 6, and I own one now. Boxers are a bundle of energy. They act like puppies until the day they die and are wonderful family dogs. We have a 2 year old who can climb all over our boxer, and he doesn't care.

Boxers are very high energy and do require a lot of patience because they can also be stubborn. They are very strong dogs and will put you on your butt or drag you down the street if they are not trained. I highly recommend obedience training if you get one. I would also recommend finding out if the breeder breeds their dogs for intelligence or looks. Intelligence is more important (Trust me on this one.). Don't get one at a pet store. You can expect to pay about $450.00 at the high end, more if you want one that is show quality.

Boxers aren't for everyone, so just do your research. If you get a boxer be prepared for a lot of fun and frustration.

I rescued one from the animal shelter a few years ago and picked up a pit/mix puppy at the same time. I brought them home to my 2 miniature dachshunds. The minis and the pit got along great. The boxer tried to tear up the pup one day. A few months later, I heard a pretty good row going on out back and it was the boxer going after one of the minis. She killed it.

Broke my heart. I kept the boxer anyway. By herself she was fine and sweet, but get her around other dogs and she would just go off. A few years later the pit/mix grew up (90 lbs). well the boxer was picking on the pit, once the pit realized he was bigger than the boxer, he started to tear up the boxer.

I had to take a 2x4 to the pit to get him off the boxer.

After that I called boxer rescue and found her a new home. We told them that the dog needed to be in a single dog home.
 
all of my friends who have boxers.....they snort and snore like a fat old man. (the boxers, not my friends......well, some of my friends too)
 
Great dogs. We have 2, both male, older one turned 4 yesterday and the young one turned 1 in May. Older one is very obedient, listens well and has gotten pretty mellow. The younger one is puppy. He has a licking thing as well. Loves to greet people and lick them. The older one never barks and the young one just barks to get attention. We actually trained the older one to ring a bell on our door to let us know he needs to go outside. My wife also trained him to ring the doorbell to let us know he wants in.

They do shedd some but nothing too bad. Older one is about 80 pounds of pure muscle but is very gentle. young one is still growing. We have an invisible fence and they both obey it very well.
 
Lady is 5 years old. She has been great with our 3 & 1year olds since they were babies. But boxers as a purebred can have health issues. She has a thyroid issue and their life expectancy is shorter compared to mixed and other breeds.
