Bowl Thread

And between Iowa and Ohio State, thats nearly a wash. Ohio State fans wont be excited as they had aspirations of another National Championship, and Iowa fans will show up in droves.

That's how I see it, too. So even if tOSU leapfrogs Iowa in the rankings, Iowa gets the bid based on extraordinary circumstances, those circumstances being that most Hok fans have waited a lifetime to get to Pasadena, and they'll travel and spend accordingly. To tOSU, anything short of another national championship is small potatoes.

I really think the committee is going reward Iowa and put them ahead of OSU and into the Rose Bowl.

Iowa's resume is better than OSU's AND Iowa is truly the B1G runner up by losing in the title game, so why shouldn't they?

If they do screw Iowa in favor of OSU, then it really does mean it's only about the $$$.

I agree. Last night proved they are a legitimate team, and I think they deserve the rose bowl.

I think Iowa might bring more fans to the game, however, Ohio State would EASILY draw more TV sets to the game than Iowa will. So which is more important dollar-wise?

I don't think Iowa-Stanford will get that great of TV ratings. Both teams are considered "boring" football, and Iowa doesn't have the population demographic that Ohio State does. An Ohio State-Stanford matchup would be more interesting in that it would be more of a game of contrasting styles.

I don't know if TV ratings play much into it. It's a New Year's Day bowl game. People will watch regardless of who is involved. What matters more to the Rose Committee is butts in the seats.

That's why iowa was selected back in '81

Iowa went to the Rose Bowl after the 1981 season (Jan 1,1982) because they tied Ohio State for the Big 10 title, however they didn't play each other so there was no head to head tiebreaker. Iowa went because Ohio State had been to the Rose Bowl more recently than Iowa had. That rule was created after Michigan and Ohio State played a tie game in the early 70's and the following day the Big 10 athletic directors met to vote which team to send to Pasadena. In that decision Ohio State received the most votes and represented the Big 10 that year.

I seem to remember back in the old days that it was Rose Bowl or bust for the Big Ten. The only bowl game a Big Ten team could go to was the Rose Bowl.

Iowa faced the 3rd best team in the Big 10 for the championship and is now looking at facing a Stanford team that lost to Northwestern and almost lost to Washington State.

They're going to go an entire season without facing a truly elite team.

(No, I don't consider Michigan State, who should've lost to Michigan and squeeked one out over Purdue elite.)

More Iowa media including Andy Garman are confirming that Iowa will be headed to the Rose Bowl. Will be either #5 or #6 (behind Stanford) in the CFP rankings and ahead of Ohio State.

I would say that Stanford is a pretty elite team right now the way they are playing. However, they are pretty one dimensional, which will help out Iowa's defense tremendously once again.

I wanted to see Iowa face someone like Houston or a healthy Baylor or TCU offense. For the most part, Iowa has got to play mostly one dimensional teams that like to ground and pound all year long. Indiana played more of a spread offense, but they had by far the worst defense in the B1G and the nation for that matter.

Iowa has had the benefit of playing against teams that don't tend to score a lot, so you're always within striking distance.

I bet the PAC ten just didn't want there winner to get throttled by the big 10's #3 team. They new they had a better chance 2
With #2 so you get Alvarado and the PAC 10 rep pushing Iowa up the rankings.
