Bowl or Bust

So all we need is an offensive minded coach, like Mark Mangino? news flash. Mark Mangino is our offensive coordinator. he has complete control. Blaney and Tommy Mangino are Mangino's guys.

It wouldn't shock me if Paul was fired and Mark took over. Its been said in previous spots that Paul often tries too hard to interject himself into the offense while the OC wants him to let it be. That's all hearsay, but I wouldn't doubt it.

If our offense is bad this year, then WHY would we elevate Mangino to Head Coach? That is incredibly stupid logic.

No kidding, I know he had limited talent last season but there's no way MM is a HC candidate based on what he's shown here. Honestly, what he did at KU shouldn't mean much in terms of whether or not he can be successful at ISU. What he's done here should outweigh that. I think he can get things going on offense here but to this point, idk why he would even be mentioned as a CPR replacement. Sadly you had people saying this same thing last fall, during a season in which our offense was one of the worst in the country. I don't want CPR gone but if he goes, I really hope we clean house and hire a totally new staff.

The kicker to this is if Mangino's offense is successful CPR isn't going anywhere. So the people wanting MM to take over the program are kind of stuck in a catch 22. The fate of these 2 coaches are totally intertwined.

Agree that the 2 coaches are totally intertwined. Mangino brought his own people in to be his assistants. The only holdover was Todd Sturdy at QB coach. The logic makes no sense at all. If Mark Mangino fails as the Offensive Coordinator then we fire the Head Coach and elevate the failed Offensive Coordinator to Head Coach??? Talk about insanity.

Depends how well the offense performs. Based on what is returning, I could see the offense doing somewhat well while the defense struggles.

Hopefully the offense does well. Because then the team will likely do okay. I will still stand by my prediction that if CPR would happen to be fired, then Mark Mangino will not be elevated to Head Coach. They will clean house.

Because if the team does well and Rhoads is retained; Mangino leaves. However, if the offense improves significantly and Rhoads is fired anyways; Mangino becomes a more attractive candidate to replace him.

[edit]: previous posts beat me to it.

hold on...aren't you the guy who has said a million times that a coach should get to have time with "his kids" to see what he can do? If Mangino is not playing with "his kids" then we really can't hold him responsible for poor play, can we? I mean, you let CPR off using that argument. Does not MM get the same amount of time?

If the offense can stay on the field long enough to keep the defense fresh, the defense will make it so the offense doesn't have to score as much to win. There's talent, experience, and good coaches on both sides of the ball, they just need both do their part.

Sooo if Mangino were to become head coach can he make Greg Davis his OC? Maybe? Iowa will pay his salary for you.

We can agree on that. If the offense does well and the team does well this year, CPR isn't going anywhere but Mangino might. If we have another bad year and CPR has to go, I don't see JP hiring Mangino no matter how well the offense does. But after watching the spring game I question if we have the running back we need to help the offense go.

I never made the comment about "his kids". I said that the present group of coaches, including Mangino and almost the entire staff, had only been here for about a year, needed more time. CPR and the whole staff are coaching this fall. I agreed with that decision. IMO, it gives us our best chance to win this fall.

Not letting CPR or anyone off the hook. CPR definitely has to have a much better season than the last 2. If things go badly then the whole staff will be let go, including Mangino. I am glad Mangino is our OC. I am hopeful he can get our offense going. Mangino had a magical year at Kansas with his 12-1 record and Orange Bowl win. Mangino's last year at Kansas was not good. 5-0 to start the season. 7 consecutive losses to end the season at 5-7. And Todd Reesing was a senior QB that last season.

For the offense, it is going to come down to the play of the Offensive Line. We need them to run block better. IMO, the running backs are not the real problem. I see decent potential in Tyler Brown and Mike Warren, and hopefully Martinez Syria. Actually more potential than we had with Wimberly and Nealy.

I agree the offensive line is the most important, but it also helps to have a back that can break tackles and push the pile if they don't have sick moves. I didn't see that in the spring game, but then Syria is probably our strongest back.

Tyler Brown and Mike Warren are an upgrade over Wimberly and Nealy when it comes to "pushing a pile" IMO. Ayeni said that both of them need to apply their strength better though.

Need to learn to push a pile like this boy with the chains on his back!

Now if only he can stay healthy!

I think part of this was ongoing issues with AD Lew Perkins. I'd love to see him be promoted to HC if Rhoads doesn't pan out.

If CPR is fired then that means Mangino did not do a good job as OC. It would be silly to promote someone who did not do their job.

No one on this staff would be the next head coach if CPR was fired.
