This makes total sense. CPR is a guy from Nevada/Ankeny who had been a successful defensive coordinator at two major conference programs. He could really sell to JP that he'd be at ISU for a long haul. After Chizik, that would be welcome.
Who were the other candidates for the ISU job back in December 2008, besides CPR?
A lack of other candidates (if that is even true) =/= an inability to attract candidates.
It would make a lot of sense if JP had Rhoads as his top choice to succeed Chizik. He may have just stopped looking at that point.
Can you prove otherwise, or are we just spinning our wheels?
That is not the way it went down. I believe that Jay Norvell was a candidate. We looked at Turner Gill, the Buffalo Coach. He did not want to be a candidate. There might have been some other candidates we looked at.
IIRC, CPR was by far the best applicant. CPR was a former Defensive Coordinator at Pittsburgh and at Auburn. There were no Brian Kelley's or Jim Harbaugh's in that groupl of candidates when CPR got the job.
So unless you can prove something by backing it up, quit making stuff up.
So list the candidates we looked at. I told you the ones I was aware of. Not sure there were any more, but it is possible there were. So fire away. Give us some more names.
I said it last year before the season... We have enough talent to be good we were just too inexperienced and had a big coaching overhaul that it might be another year. I still stand by that and that we will be bowling this year. Not to mention all the injuries hindered it even more. Only a fool would expect an inexperienced team and/or a team with a bunch of new coaches to be good. Sometimes it happens, but it's the exception not the rule.
The good news, opposed to last season in spring and August of 2014??
I watched several videos of Wally B in 2014 answering questions about defensive players with : "He caught my eye"
that is code for: We no good.
I haven't heard Wally utter that response yet in 2015...."He caught my eye"
the bad news? I'm fearful of another 2-10 season. Just don't feel it with this team.
Do you know all of the candidates? Rhoads was hired very quickly as well, we don't know everybody that was on the list and likely never will.
I know that Turner Gill was supposedly contacted, but he turned us down. Jay Norvell was interviewed in 2006 and supposedly was interviewed again. I did not hear of any head coaches from mid-majors applying for the job in 2009, like they did in 2006.

Allegations have been made that candidates better qualified for the job applied, but Rhoads was given the job because JP figured he would stay as coach and not move on. From the evidence I have seen, it appears that Rhoads was likely the best candidate that applied.
We don't (and won't) know about potential candidates back in 2008 because the process moved so quickly. Just like it did when we hired Hoiberg.
But in 2006, we had just fired the winningest coach in school history and didn't have near the facilities and fan base as we did back then. And Jim Harbaugh and Brian Kelly were legit candidates.
And Chizik bombed in his 2 years at Iowa State and the perception changed that the Iowa State job could hurt a coach's career. Possible Coaching Graveyard. How many coaches applied for the Kansas job? Same perception problem.

So is that a reason to settle for a bad candidate after Paul?... or mean we need an attitude adjustment? I think we need an attitude adjustment. ISU is too good of a school to allow this much sucktitude in football.
Let's see what the attitude is this year before saying it needs adjusted. The coaches sound more encouraged than they have the previous few years.
