Bowen Born

It was a bit tongue in cheek. Didn't figure I'd need a pirate emoji, but that said, I do think Born is talented and could make Iowa State's roster

You just never know. Odds are against it with his size, but I've seen smaller players like that really go off. I wouldn't have complained if he signed at ISU, but I trust the coach's evaluations more than I trust my own opinion.

Grill didn't just get offered by P6 schools.. he got offered by three Big 12 schools, two of them being the teams that were Co - Big 12 Champions last year. He also got offered by Fred at Nebraska. So, if you think Bruce Weber, Steve Prohm, Chris Beard, and Fred Hoiberg are wrong in their assessment of Grill, then I guess that's your opinion.

Mike Born was going to do whatever he could to get his kid into a position to receive big time offers but not one pulled the trigger. There's a reason no school did. If you want to blame it on height, which is a ginormous element in the game of basketball, so be it. I'm sure there are tons of undersized kids that would've been tremendous players if they were a few inches taller. I'm sure there were 6'8" post players who would've gone D1 if they were 6'11", but they weren't.

Our starting center in high school was 6'4".

Things were hardcore in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

Greg Brunner was the starting center for my NEIC high school at 6'5 3/4" in his sneakers. I totally get where you're coming from.

He just outplayed our 4-star top 60 kid, completely worked him on the court, score board, and stat sheet.

No big deal though.

Yeah that time Born posted up Foster and drop step dunked on him was awesome. And the way he lined up inside him on free throws and just owned him on the glass was sweet too.

They were on the court together but didn't really play head to head. If you've seen Osky play this year without Foster (I have) you know they aren't very good, so putting up huge perimeter numbers against them isn't very exciting.

Crazy thought here:

1) Born is an outstanding player that will have a very, very good college career and probably could contribute at the P6 level due to his shooting and ball skills

2) Iowa State and others were scared off by his stature and were justified in passing on him

It's like these two things aren't mutually exclusive.

3.) There were rumors that Duke was getting involved in his recruitment which scared off numerous potential P6 offers.

Grill didn't get offered by those schools until after TJ left for UNLV. Teams had to fill schollarships and he was the best on the board. If Jacobsen leaves UNI and teams need a player and Bowen Decommits, you can bet your ass some Power 6 teams will come trying to get him. Grill was Committed to a mid major until that happened.

Also to the argument that born plays against small town Iowa kids. He also plays on the top AAU circuit against the best. His height is what is holding him back.

Except he had Texas Tech, Nebraska, and Washington St offers prior to signing with SDSU.

(4.) I heard some Australian and Spanish clubs were dangling money at him to play overseas before he plans on declaring for the NBA draft.

Grill chose TJ over Texas Tech

I'd agree with you to the above. To the below, I wasn't saying Born isn't good. I was arguing with someone who was comparing Grill's ppg in high school compared to Bowen's. Bowen would not be averaging 40 ppg in 5A Kansas High School Basketball.

It’s exhausting. I’m sure there is some other random kid at some other small school in Iowa overmatching their schedule and putting up huge numbers with non P5 size. Where is that kids thread? Mike was a good Cyclone, he’s a good guy. If he thought Bowen could play and thrive at a P5 level he would have him there.
I'll do you one better. Malik Allen is a 5'11" junior that is averaging 28 ppg for Des Moines North (who plays a tougher schedule than Norwalk). If he can bump that up into the mid-thirties next year we are guaranteed to offer him.

But can he make a 3?
