Bo Ryan to retire in 1 year

Big respect for Bo, especially growing up in WI and rooting for them as a kid, hope he finishes strong but can't wait to start pillaging their recruiting grounds

Just curious after seeing a handful of teams announce their successor before the coach retiring... Isn't there some legal requirement to carry out a equal and fair coaching search to fill a vacant position, or does that not apply in case of a retirement and then someone getting promoted?

That's why they worded it as Bo's hope that he gets the job. If the AD came out and said that's what's happening then there may be an issue.

I am mildly surprised it wasn't effective immediately.

Madison has a strong hoops culture in place and great fan support. however its an absolutely critical hire- much moreso than football- because it takes a special coach to win with this system and keep fans engaged. people still remember Steve Yoder.

That's true, but didn't Syracuse name assistant Mike Hopkins the "Head Coach Designate" and didn't Kevin Ollie essentially just get promoted, though?

So Bo promised TJ the head coaching job when he retires so that's why TJ didn't get the HC job here?

Conspiracy!

Can't they just promote Gard to HC and demote Bo (in title only) to an assistant? He then retires and Gard fills the assistant coach job after a job search...
