Blockbuster calls it quits

Krispy Kreme

I always thought the dilution of their brand was what hurt them. Their big thing was how you needed to get them hot and fresh, so the best place to get them was at one of their stores. Then they started distributing to a lot of places like gas stations and everyone goes 'those arent that special'

Having a stand-alone retail outlet is the death knell of some corporations who get too aggressive

Krispy Kreme
Gateway Computers
Starbucks
Blockbuster

All have closed some or all their stand-alone retail buildings th last few years

i see stand alone starbucks opening EVERYWHERE.

It was always so embarrassing in high school to rent a movie from the "back room" at Family Video. You had to take that stupid orange square with the title on it up to the counter. Like anyone didn't know what you were actually doing.

I liked the guys that would hang out near the back room entrance for extended periods of time pretending to look at regular movies, but they were just waiting for enough people to not look their way so they could jet back there.

Also funny when they peek back out trying to see if they can leave without people noticing.

Your Fired. Merry X-MAS!

realize it's failing as a business and it has to happen, but to do it at holiday time is always a nice touch.

I still go to a family video for new dvd releases and xbox games. The former porn room is now full of video games. Since I found it I haven't been to a Redbox.

Well at least the average video store probably doesnt employ that many people, especially with how downhill that business has been.

Hah - Moovies (Holy cow, what a video store!). This makes me think about that scene in Clerks when he's ordering all those porn movies and that kid wants happy, scrappy hero pup, or something.

Not that I would know, but I BELIEVE the former porn room was moved to the opposite corner in the back to make room for games. However, you need to ask the manager for a key to get in there.

Again, not that I would know.

Maybe I can find a copy of On Golden Blonde or Remember the Tight Ones.

I'm calling BS on this :)

I like downloadable rentals but downloadable content priced to "own" is just a massive ripoff for consumers. Downloadable video games are usually overpriced, you can't resell them on ebay, craigslist or at a game shop like any physical game, then down the road you can't always play them on the current device or you have to rebuy them. Things like Nintendo charging 5 bucks for an NES game then making you pay for it again on their next console.

Books and comics are an even bigger ripoff. I was going to get a Kindle till I saw the first three books I wanted to buy all cost MORE on Kindle than I could easily buy a new copy for...then sell or trade my real books if I want to. Comics cost exactly the same to buy the electronic version, I can't ever sell e-comics, and some of my physical comics I sell down the road for many times what I paid for them.

Damn, here I thought I was fooling everybody all of these years.

Stand alone stores have nothing to do with why these businesses have struggled.

Krispy Kreme - as mentioned earlier, dilution of product. Had Krispy Kreme stayed put in their stand alone stores they would have been just fine because there's almost nothing better than a "hot now". When they started producing for outlets is when they lost it.

Gateway - Gateway's "demise" had much less to do with them opening stand alone stores and a lot more to do with their quality of product (or more precisely, lack thereof). In the early 2000s Gateway was a great product and at the top of the industry. Now? Not so much.

Starbucks - One of these things is not like the others.... Not struggling whatsoever. They have been opening new stand alone stores daily for more than a decade and show no signs of slowing down, even amongst competition.

Blockbuster - has nothing to do with having too many stand alone stores or over expansion. Their product became irrelevant and as a result they shut down.
