Bikers on Roads

Bicycles on a highway are as annoying as Priuses and Smart Cars on the interstate. None of which were designed to leave France.

Biking to go somewhere as a need to use the road is fine.

Biking for a hobby on the roads is annoying. If it just for a workout or hobby find a freaking bike trail. No sympathy for rec bikers getting crapped on while riding.

Do you ever go for pleasure drives? I find that by your analogy to be annoying. It wastes natural resources and clogs the roads.

I have no sympathy for your stupid statements.

Why would I drive for fun? So no.

I have no sympathy for old guys who get their rocks off by making fun of peoples opinions on message boards. Sweet life dude. I guess you are more of a real man for calling my opinions stupid.

Funny how I never said anything about me driving anywhere for 'pleasure'. My point was a lot of Bikers will only ride on roadways and never seek out bike trails.

I don't "get my rocks off by making fun of people's opinions on message boards."

Your the one that said you "had no sympathy for rec bikers getting crapped on while riding."

In hindsight I shouldn't have responded because the freightening nature of your statement speaks for itself.

Yeah, to carry through the analogy why put yourself in the situation of driving in an auto? When a semi-tractor squishes your auto and you like a mellon, does having the same "rights" matter?
I don't think anyone is debating this. I'm pretty sure it is already established.

You are right about one thing, I don't put myself in a situation where a tractor-trailer would squish me and my auto. Thanks for making my point about maybe bikes should do the same with autos.

i totally agree! to even this out, anytime a car buzz's a cyclist the cyclist should be able to pull out an AR and unload on the car until it is out of sight. that would make things 'fair'! i love this idea! a few dead motorists would make this thing a lot more 'fair'.

1. Who said anything about any of this being fair?
2. Fair has nothing to do with it.
3. Car vs. bike outcome equals: CAR WINS (every time.)

You all are a bunch of dicks to riders. A guy gets run over on his bike and it is his fault? By law, bicycles have the same right to the road as any vehicle. I agree riders shouldn't ride side by side but instead should ride single file. But really? This is the bikers fault? I ride roads all the time. I'm a bit more worried now after reading this thread. It sounds like most of you would LIKE to run me over. Dicks.

Driver gets a bloody hood, the knowledge his road rage led to the loss of a life (if he cares) and, if we get back to fair, gets some time in a jail cell to sort out his proirties.

Not much of a win really, so I'll skip the smiley face.

Don't forget the wrongful death civil suit by the family.

The best thing for the passing of better biker protection legislation would be for a member of the state house to read this thread - from the attitude of this sampling of drivers its a scary road out there.

Again, if nothing else, please watch out for an overweight guy on a blue Trek. He'll leave a big dent and waste you precious seconds of driving time hoisting his body off your hood.

Exactly! As a cyclist, some of the opinions in this thread both disgust and frighten me.

i used to have a old gernade hanging from my seat rails. of course, it was not live, but it still shattered the window of the guy who tried to run me off the road.

Simmer down there Mr. Biker. Nobody is saying this is the guy's fault, nor are we saying we'd like to run people over. What we are saying is that country roads are unsafe for bikers for a multitude of reasons. Not to mention, very frustrating to get stuck behind a group of bikers going 40 mph slower. I'm sorry, but there are other places you can ride that doesn't impede the vast majority of people.

How's this. Bikers continue to ride on country roads, and cars start driving on bike paths. Afterall, so many people in this thread are into making comparisons that show how biking is so much more beneficial and how motorists are major ********, why not make that comparison?

Yeah, I like that. The distance between point A and point B has gotten significantly shorter for motorists!

You still don't get it. It is unsafe for bicyclists because you make it unsafe. When you think that you have complete ownership of the road system even though the law states that is not the case and don't respect the rights of bicyclists you create the unsafe situation.

It can work. I live outside a Colorado mountain resort community. There are county roads here just like there is in Iowa (and they contain far more hills). In fact, I live off a county road. A staple of the mountain resort communities is that they have an abundance of bicyle shops. These bicycle shops do a brisk rental business. Other than Interstate 70 you will find bicycles everywhere that you find automobiles. And it works because people have adopted the mentality that bicycles have the right to use the road system.

How about the Brush County Beetdiggers? is it ok to use their system outside of you community? (Sorry, couldn't resist. Strong impression from the Beetdiggers my freshman year. Thank you for the loan of one of your buses!!!)

Bikes are not as scary as popping a hill and coming up fast on a 10 mph horse drawn Amish wagon at dusk that is using the road and not shoulder. For those that don't know, they are black and don't generally use any lighting and only sometimes orange triangle reflectors that are used on farm equipment.
