Bikers on Roads

Anybody else hate them? I heard on the news a few minutes ago that these dudes were riding side-by-side, 8 of them, and a truck passed them and clipped them with one of his trailers.

Personally, these guys are idiots. They ride side by side, blocking off country roads and never ride single file.

Edit: To specify - Bicycles.

Pedal. I saw the story. It sounded like there were 8 of them riding down a county road near Winterset, and one of them got ran over by a truck pulling two anhydrous ammonia tanks.

Riding down a curving county road is probably not the best idea when farmers are planting.

I wanted to chuck eggs at the lady that they interviewed too. "He was honking, although we're used to that. But if they make penalties harsher, it'd make people think more about safety." *sniffle*

Hey, here you go, ride single file and give people the ability to pass you, and you don't have to worry about road raged drivers losing their cool. Not to mention, it's hard to see these guys sometimes, and if you're in any sort of hurry, forget about it.

i agree why do they have to take up a whole lane?

I don't think road rage had anything to do with it. They were coming around what looked to be a blind curve. Chances are the truck driver never saw them until it was too late.

Had they been single file, and near the shoulder, the whole thing would have been avoided.
 
You're spot on with this SH. I can understand riding side by side with no one there but the smart riders always have a mirror so they can see anyone coming behind them. In a situation such as this, they should have moved to single file.

Edit: Didn't know it was on a curve. Even more the reason to ride single file. Same goes for hills.

I know those roads in Madison County like the back of my hand. Lots of hills, hidden driveways, and blind curves, especially near St. Charles

It is absolutely crazy how much support from government bikers get. Everybody I talk to think there needs to be something done about them riding on county roads. Taxpayers spend millions on bike trails and there are hundreds of miles of them in Iowa now. Why can't they use them? Are they the "special" riders who think they are better than everyone else, or are they just stupid? I am not a bike rider, but if I was, no way in hell would I ride on a 2 lane county road, especially around dusk and dawn when I typically see them.

Here in the city (Chicago), what really ticks me off is that 95% of bike riders will not obey stop signs (and sometimes traffic lights), but will complain to no end about cars. A lot of cars are jerks toward cyclists, but you need to obey the rules of the road if you expect respect.

For every group of bikers 8-wide, there are 10x that many stupid drivers that get angry and do stupid things. Everyone who's biked more than a few miles can tell you about an angry driver that's damn near run them down when biking correctly. My brother was clipped by a mirror while a car few by him. Thankfully unhurt, but I have no pity for for next angry old man who goes to jail for manslaughter. Wonder how many drivers are killed by bicycles each year?

Roads are for bicycles as well.

I bike on county roads a lot in the summer, and even on long, straight, deserted stretches of highway, lots of punks (usually in pick-ups) will pass as close as they can because they're irritated. A tougher law is well-needed.
On the other hand, until bicyclists actually "stop" at stop signs and red lights (yes I do) as cars must, they will never get respect from motorists. And I never see cops stop the offending riders and ticket them...

Most bikes slow down to about the speed most drivers do at deserted stop signs. genuflect and go.

My opinion: Bikers on the road can be dangerous, especially around curves and hills. I really don't know of a solution that would fix this problem, because you can't tell them they can't ride on the roads. Sure, there are bike trails around, but not everywhere. I don't mind meeting them on the road if they seem to be trying to be safe. I hate the bikers that seem to be oblivious to their surroundings and ride in the middle of the road. Move over.
