Big10 rumors today

I wish we could just fast forward through all this and get to the end result, which will be Big 10 vs SEC.

Why would the SEC going to 4 pods with a semifinal weekend force the B1G into expanding sooner than it wants and take Alliance schools off the table?

I think the idea is that with 4 pods, the SEC would do a semifinal round before the CCG. Which would mean even more $$$$. If the B1G thinks that would work, why leave that money on the table while the SEC enjoys the spoils.

FWIW, I don't put much stock into this guy. Like other realignment, it's fun to speculate.

B1G should just build a massive conference with all the remaining power 5 AAU schools from the PAC/ACC/Big12.

Yeah, why the heck not? When conferences are talking about 16, 20, 24 members … that’s not a “conference.” It’s a loose scheduling arrangement.

I know the ship has sailed, because $$$, but I’m going to miss regionally grouped conferences with longtime rivalries and traditions where the occasional cross-conference meeting of power teams was a big deal because they rarely played each other. Compared to “pods” and missing some teams in your own conference for years on end (hey, Ohio State, bet you forgot Iowa even shares a conference with you) and unbalanced schedules that don’t get you a real true champion …

Now get off my lawn before I turn on my Big 8-brand sprinklers with the SWC spray pattern. Punks.

Got it. I'd think to do that though they'd have to cut an SEC conference game during the regular season, no? Or can they just add another game before CCG and bowls?

They could probably keep a 9 game conference schedule. Play the 3 teams in your pod every year, 2 teams from each of the other pods on a rotating basis.

Not sure about the extra game. It would just be the 4 pod winners in the semis, so doubt they do anything with the other 12 to take attention away from those games.

It'd be interesting if they actually took that step. One thing it does is risks a CFP spot. If a Bama and/or a Georgia are upset in the semis, and a two- or maybe even three-loss semifinalist catches lightning and wins out, there'd be no guarantee they'd get a CFP spot as long as it's at four. That'd be a costly outcome.

Why would they have to cut a conference game? They have played 8 conference games forever while other conferences have bucked up and are playing 9.

I’ve got it! Three-game conference schedule - you only play the rest of your pod. Six games against FCS/MAC/Sun Belt schools, one against another Power conference. Then you can play a conference quarterfinal/semifinal/championship, no problem.

Simple! We already know “it’s not just college football - it‘s SEC football” (to quote their own promos), they’re already obviously the best teams ever, there’s no need to prove it on the field. Let the preseason rankings carry them through the schedule, just like always!

Yeah, but those semi-finals might be worth just about as much as the first playoff round. It's worth it even if it means losing out on a CFP every 10 years or so.

I think what they will do is, play 8 conference games, then on semifinal wknd, they will have the pod winners play the semi's and match up the remaining teams based on pod standings for their 9th conference game. Kind of like what the big 10 tinkered with last year. Not all of the games would be great but it's a nice way to set up some TV friendly matchups.

After the BYU versus Costal Carolina game last year, I love this idea of saving a game at the end of the year to get good tv match ups and playoff clarity.
