Big DB's may be committing to ISU

Getting those 4-6 top Iowa players is important, because if you do not get them, you are forced to wage out-of-state recruiting battles with other schools for recruits of the same caliber. Any time you recruit out of state, you are recruiting at a disadvantage. We cannot be a successful program if we are forced to take other schools' recruiting scraps.

A good point...

What I was trying to say is that we will never be able to field an entire football team of Iowa players that can be competitive in the Big 12. It just won't happen given the number of D1 prospects that are legit in Iowa each year. Throw in the fact we have to compete with Iowa and out of state schools for those services and a 50% commitment ratio year in and year out would be quite successful in my mind. That would only be 2-3 players per year of the 3-4 star variety. Our team success will depend on surrounding those few instate recruits with quality from outside the state. A challenging proposition, but I stand by my statement that recruiting success outside of Iowa will go further in determining ISU's onfield prowess.

get your skill guys in Iowa and your DB's WR's LB's and DL.
In my book skill guys are the OL. I'm not talking about the Big burly guys, I'm talking about the guys like Orne, Like LaMaak, Like what I though Eilert would be. 6'4 and up and around 220-240 that can be DEVELOPED into an OL, not the 6'5 300 pounders that can't move.
Obviously there will be exceptions, but its a model that should work.

I would agree with that. The majority of our recruits will be out-of-state, and taken as a whole, our out-of-state recruiting makes a larger impact. But it's still important for us to get those top Iowa recruits, because it makes the out-of-state recruiting that much easier. :)

sarcasm on

But are we recruiting the guys who can twirl the towel on key plays from behind the bench? Mac was always good at getting 4-6 of those guys on scholly. I hope Chiz is not wasting schollys on guys who are actually going to be playing.

sacarsm off.

I guess my point is lets go out and find a hell of kicker that takes care of both place kicking and kick offs. If the guy can't kick to the endzone, then we don't want him.
One scholly for that guy and the punter. I am just tired of hearing "well, PlayerA was awesome in practice this week, or player b and C was 5-5 on 50 yard field goals on Friday, but then don't perform when it counts. ( I know Bret has a good average, but you know what I mean.) My only beef with Bret the ball needs to be in the Red Zone so he can make it. Hopefully he will be mister clutch this year.

Looking at the Rivals website, their top 5 ranked players from the state are all going to Iowa. I didn't check every state, but I couldn't find any other one where the top 5 players are all going to the same school.

ISU is by far not the only program in the nation to recruit guys, give them scholarships to only have them ride the pine.

It would be nice if there was some sort of data that showed programs and their scholarship recruits by year and how many of them actually saw a decent amount of playing time. And then would show walk-ons and the time they saw.

I know we'd not be at the top and we've had some recruiting blunders in our past. Would just be nice to see where we actually stack up.

He also awarded a scholarship to the PK recruited from Bettendorf HS last year.

Chris Mahoski...very good in high school, injured his leg during his senior year playing soccer (now that's what I call a waste!). Anyway, hopefully he's fully recovered and can again kick the ball out of the end zone on kick-offs and nail 50 yard FGs.

Yeah I watched Mahoski and the UNI-Dome his senior year at Bett. It seemed like he was a stud and was consistently kicking the ball not only far, but onto the walkway behind the endzone. I think when it is all said and done, Mahoski will be a good one

In future years, I fully expect Chizik to wage recruiting war against UI and other midwest schools to sign the top Iowa recruits. Our success depends on it.

I still think he will be recruiting heavily out of state. I don't think this has anything to do with competing with EIU. In fact, I see us losing to Iowa but maybe pulling an upset over Texas. Chizik will put more emphasis on conference games and that's what I want out of a head football coach.
