I think it is a really difficult call between Wiggins, Ejim and Kane. As the stats point out, Ejim outperforms Wiggins in most major statistics. But KU finished #1, and we will likely finish #4, even with Ejim and Kane. Should that matter? Maybe not, but it will.
Would love to see Ejim get it, but as I said, I don't think a choice of Wiggins will be a snub. Having Kane in the mix will probably hurt Ejim, as I don't see Embiid getting any play for POY, but Kane could pull some votes from Melvin.
1. Ejim leads the league in scoring over ALL games not just conference games. I am not sure why you would put Staten at #1.
2. I'd give Ejim the Big 12 player of the year, but I am incredibly biased. However, the stats show that he should be in that discussion. I think that when you have a 4 year guy that is that good, it is OK to give him the edge.
3. Kane is awfully good too and deserves consideration.
4. I wonder if coaches think about things like splitting the vote? For example, if I am a Big 12 coach and I think that Ejim and Kane deserve consideration, but I don't think Wiggins should get it, I'd try and figure out who everyone else is voting for. Likewise, if I am Hoiberg and I can't vote for my guys, it would be hard to vote for Wiggins. Luckily Hoiberg is not as petty as I am.
When is the vote? If Ejim goes on a tear in the last season game and during the Big 12 tourney, he could rally some votes for himself, particularly if Wiggins doesn't do so well. And let's throw in a few game-winning shots by Ejim for good measure.
I agree tired of the hype - Wiggins will be fortunate to win Freshmen of the Year - check out KSU Freshmen Marcus Foster production in conference play.Wiggins is great, but Ill be irritated if he wins it.
Pretty sure it comes out before the tournament. Some media ballots are probably already turned in.
The moer **** i see linked from Kenpom the less I'm convinced he has any idea what he's talking about, or watches games.
Briefly, this award is based on a player’s value to his team in combination with his team’s strength. This has nothing to do with a player’s NBA potential nor should be taken as such. Nor is it attempting to predict the outcome of any other human-based POY award. It’s simply one system’s measure of a player’s value.
