Big 12 Mexico?

Arizona and Texas Tech can play a football game in Mexico and Kansas and San Diego State go play a basketball game there.

Might Yormark just be dazzling them with BS? I could see him throwing out ideas like this just to keep every other commissioner on edge. He really seems to be positioning himself to be the creative leader among the conference commissioners. He has had more creativity in 1 year than the rest of the suits have had in 10 years combined.

OK, I'll be the first to say that this might be a sign of the coming legalization of drug use by Big 12 players. Even if they don't change the rules here, they might get lots of interests in players wanting to play on the road in order to take advantage of some of the fringe benefits available in Mexico.

I’m sorry but what? The coming legalization of drug use by Big12 players? Where in the world are you getting this idea?

Please note the jimlad :jimlad: which on this site indicates sarcasm.

I think it could be a little of both.

In the interview in the OP Yormark notes that some of these Ideas he wanted to wait to announce until after the Big 12 conference business workshop. (Yet by mentioning them he legitimized any leak).

I don’t think it is a coincidence that this interview was released just as we heard stories about Arizona and Colorado getting antsy about the lack of PAC action on a media deal.

I think they are ideas he genially has, but he does not know if or how they play out. He simply is sending notice to anyone that the Big 12 is no longer comfy with status quo.

I wonder how well the NFL playing games overseas is paying off.

As far as the Big 12 in Mexico, I wonder how you directly monetize this. Maybe work a deal with ESPN and Fox to divvy up additional subscription revenue from Mexico for playing some games down there.

I have no idea what the potential is, but if something like ESPN+ could get 1/10th of the rate of subscribers they do in the US, that would be well over $100M in additional revenue.

If the operations of the games themselves could be close to break-even, it seems like it would be worth it to start with a few games down there.
ESPN the Ocho would dominate

44% of Houston's population is Hispanic. 58% of Univ. of Houston's enrollment is Hispanic. A huge part of this % is Mexican heritage. Get Dad and Mom a U of H shirt with the Cougars on one side and Big 12 Mexico on the other side.
